Miami Legend Wayne Gibson Passes Away
On Nov. 14, Miami and Northern Illinois will competed for the Mallory Cup, honoring, Bill Mallory, one of the all-time great Mid-American Conference coaches. Mallory was 64-31 all-time as a head coach in the Mid-American Conference for both Miami and NIU. His 64 wins and .674 win percentage rank eighth in conference history.
Mallory, who passed away on May 25, 2018, was 39-12 in five years (1969-73) as Miami's head coach, including a MAC Championship season in 1973 in which Miami went 11-0, including a Tangerine Bowl victory over Florida. After a stint at Colorado, Mallory coached Northern Illinois from 1980-83, compiling a 25-19 record in DeKalb. NIU won its first conference championship in 1983 under the guidance of coach Mallory. Mallory is believed to be the only football coach in history to win a championship with two different MAC schools. He also won MAC Coach of the Year in 1973 with Miami and 1983 with NIU.
In a game dominated by the defenses, it was a defensive score that made the difference as Miami picked up a huge 13-7 road victory against eventual MAC Champion, Northern Illinois. Down 7-6 with 7:21 left to play in the third quarter, Miami freshman cornerback Ja'don Rucker-Furlow intercepted NIU quarterback Marcus Childers and returned it for a touchdown. The RedHawk defense was superb all game, limiting Northern Illinois to just 15 first downs in the game and turning the Huskies over twice. Following the Rucker-Furlow interception midway through the third quarter, Miami would force NIU to punt five times in a row and then seal the game with back-to-back fourth down stops late in the fourth quarter. This was Miami's first win on the road versus the Huskies since 1998.
Miami University Athletics will honor five esteemed individuals the weekend of October 12-13, 2018 as it inducts the Cradle of Coaches Class of 2018-19. Comprising this year's class is Dr. Richard Ceronie PhD '93 (cross county/track & field), Ron Hunter '86 (basketball), Don Knodel '53 (basketball), Bobby Kramig (soccer) and Jim Tressel (football).
The members of the Cradle of Coaches Class of 2018-19 will be honored during an induction dinner on Friday, Oct. 12 at the Shriver Center in the John E. Dolibois Room. There will be a reception from 6-6:30 p.m. with the dinner and induction following at 6:30 p.m. Reservations for the dinner may be made online by clicking HERE or by calling the Miami Athletic Ticket Office at (513) 529-4295.
