The 2019 football season is the 150th anniversary of college football. Here at MiamiRedHawks.com, we will honor some of the all-time greats to play for Miami University as well as those that have made an impact on the field since their graduation. We caught up with Dan Dalrymple to hear about the memories he made while wearing the Red and White.
Â

I know it's a bit of a broad question, but how would you explain your time at Miami?Â
DD: I would describe my time as a student at Miami as some of my fondest memories and most transformative times in my life. I can honestly say that my entire life since has been made possible by Miami. My closest friendships, my job and even my wife are all a result of that relationship with the University.
Â
How did Miami help you to prepare for life outside of football?
DD: I've uniquely never had a life outside of football! But, referring back to question #1- it prepared me for and made possible my whole life!
Â
What was your favorite moment on the playing field at Miami and why?
DD: Beating #8 ranked LSU my senior year. Highest ranked team ever beaten up to that point by a MAC team. And now of course I live in Louisiana and work with as well as have many friends who are LSU grads. Many of whom were at or at least remember the game.
Â
What advice would you give a student-athlete at Miami to help them achieve their goals?
DD: Work hard. Build and nurture relationships. Don't be afraid to fail- get back up when you do. Be relentless in your pursuit of success.
Â
Did you have a favorite teammate in your time at Miami? What made him special?
DD: Try not to pick favorites! I had a bunch of great teammates all special in their own way!
Â
What was your favorite place to eat in Oxford?
DD: Wings at Mac & Joes, Bagel and Deli, SDS Pizza. When I was in school and during training camp while I was coaching there Martin Dining Hall.
Â
Funniest moment in your time at Miami?
Most are not suitable for publication here. But there were SO MANY great times!
Â
Was there someone, maybe a professor or advisor that had a major impact on your time at Miami?
DD: I don't know that there was a professor, advisor or coach that doesn't stand out as a major impact on me. Faculty- Profs and instructors like Dick Simmons, Ken Connor, John Trump, Robin Vealey and Alan Ingham. Coaching wise Bob Messaros, Mike Watson and Rich Spisak were my position coaches during my playing time and built me into the player and man I became. Of course my Head Coach Tim Rose left an indelible mark on my life. Terry Hoeppner- owe him so much. Randy Walker was the single most significant influence on my coaching career. His is the voice I hear in my head every day while I coach. Most decisions are parsed by "what would Walk do?" Also during my 19 years coaching at Miami Darrell Hedric was a great mentor as was the great Charlie Coles. And I'm sure that I left too many people off the list!
Â
Tell us about your life now. What are you doing? Any major accomplishments we should be aware of? Â
DD: 14th year as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach of the New Orleans Saints. Super Bowl Champion and was just named NFL Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year for the second time. Married to Susan Bascone-Dalrymple (B.S and M.B.A. from Miami 25 years this summer). Two kids Kylie and Danny.
