OXFORD, Ohio – Four RedHawks scored in double figures as the Miami University women's basketball team downed Akron, 74-56, on Saturday afternoon. How it Happened:
- Singer's three-point play spotted Miami an early 5-4 lead and after Akron got open for a triple, Ilse de Vries found Taylor for a wide open three-pointer to make it 8-7. Four-straight layups from Mio Sakano, Amber Tretter, Taylor and Singer made it 16-7 with four minutes left in the opening quarter. Akron closed on a 5-0 run, trimming Miami's advantage to 16-12.
- Miami led 18-15, 90 seconds into the second quarter before back-to-back triples from Singer and Jurjo along with a layup from Taylor forced an Akron timeout midway through the quarter. Taylor added another layup and Jurjo knocked down her second triple of the quarter, completing a 13-0 run to spot Miami a 31-15 advantage. Miami led 37-21 at the half.
- A Zips bucket three minutes into the third closed the gap, 39-28, but back-to-back layups from Tretter and Scalia pushed the lead back to 15. The Zips responded with a 5-0 run to make it a 10-point contest before de Vries and Jurjo combined for three buckets in a 60-second span to make it 49-33. A three-pointer from Sakano with two minutes left in the third gave Miami a 19-point advantage.
- Scalia's three-pointer from the corner, followed by a layup from Tretter made it 63-39 with 7:29 to play. The Zips scored the next four to get within 20, but a 7-2 run, highlighted by five points from Scalia pushed Miami's lead, 70-45 at the final media timeout of the contest. Akron would get no closer than 18 points over the final five minutes of the contest.
