Miami Splits Doubleheader with SEMO; Appelwick Breaks Career Home Run Record

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Miami split a doubleheader against SEMO Saturday, falling 10-2 in game one before bouncing back to win game two 14-6. In game one, Evan Appelwick hit his 45th career home run with the RedHawks, breaking the all-time school record for career home runs set by Michael Carlin (2000-2003). In game two, Dominic Krupinski and Tommy Harrison each hit two homers. Miami moves to 8-3 with the split, and SEMO moves to 5-7.

The RedHawks will seek to tie the series against SEMO tomorrow in a 2 p.m. contest before returning to Ohio to face Wright State on the road on Tuesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE):
- SEMO took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring one run on two doubles.
- Marcus Dierks made his way around the bases on an HBP, a stolen base, a throwing error and a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1 in the second.
- SEMO answered with three runs in the bottom of the second on three hits, including a solo home run.
- Working off three hits, SEMO pulled ahead 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
- Leading off the sixth inning, Appelwick hit his seventh home run of the season, a solo homer, setting a new Red and White record for the most career home runs with 45 total.
- SEMO answered in the bottom of the frame with a home run to make it 8-2.
- A walk, an HBP and a double scored one more run for SEMO, capping off a 10-2 final score.
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME ONE):
- Appelwick went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. His home run sets a new Red and White record for career home runs with 45.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO):
- After a scoreless first inning, the RedHawks brought the bats in the second, taking an early 6-0 lead. After Ryan Novak walked and stole second, Harrison hit a home run to deep right field, clearing the bases. Krupinski and Ryder Kirtley each followed with singles, and Keenan Proctor hit his first home run of the season, clearing the bases. Dierks singled and advanced three bases on two wild pitches to score the final run.
- Zac Sohosky recorded three straight outs, including two strikeouts, in the bottom of the second.
- After an error and a walk put two aboard, Krupinski homered to right field, adding three to the tally for Miami to make it 9-0.
- SEMO scored its first runs of the game in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on three hits to bring four around.
- Harrison hit his second straight homer and his third of the season to score Miami's tenth run of the day.
- Proctor led off the fifth with an HBP, and Diego Cruz doubled down the right foul line. Dierks and Carson Raether came up with a sac fly and an RBI groundout, respectively, to bring both baserunners home. This made it a 12-4 game.
- Alex Gay saw three up, three down in the bottom of both the fifth and sixth. This included two sixth-inning strikeouts.
- Miami scored one more run in the seventh. Cruz and Dierks each singled and stole a bag, and Appelwick walked to load the bases. Novak walked to force in the run.
- SEMO scored a run in the bottom of the inning using a walk, a wild pitch and a double.
- The final RedHawk run came on a solo shot by Krupinski in the top of the eighth to pull ahead nine runs, 14-5.
- SEMO managed to bring two aboard in the ninth and score one via a double, but Taylor Echols managed to record the final out to round out the 14-6 Miami victory.

- Dierks went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
- Novak tallied an RBI and two runs.
- Harrison went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs.
- Krupinski went three-for-four with four RBIs and three runs.
- Proctor went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
- Cruz went 3-for-5 with two runs.
- Gay pitched 4.2 innings, holding opponents to a single hit and a single home run while striking out six.
