RedHawks Drop Heart-Breaker at UMass, 65-64

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team converted a layup with under two seconds to play to snap Miami's 13-game win streak, 65-64, on Saturday afternoon. Amber Tretter, who surpassed 1,000 career points, led the team with 20, while Tamar Singer (17), Ilse de Vries (14) and Amber Scalia (11) all went for double figures as the RedHawks drop to 20-5 overall, 11-1 MAC. Allie Palmieri had 15 points for UMass (18-6, 10-2 MAC).

How it Happened:
- Miami's offense struggled out of the gate and trailed UMass 7-4 at the first media timeout. Clara Gonzalez Planella drove past a defender to make it a one-point game and Scalia added a bucket late in the quarter to spot Miami an 8-7 advantage. The RedHawks held the Minutewomen scoreless the final 5:22 of the first quarter.
- de Vries converted a bucket to open the second quarter, but four-straight points for the Minutewomen gave UMass an 11-10 lead. UMass maintained a 13-12 lead before Singer stole the ball near mid-court and walked in for a layup. UMass closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to lead 23-18 at the half.
- Less than a minute into the third, UMass claimed their largest lead of the game, 27-18. Tretter knocked down a straight-away triple to trim the deficit to six. Moments later UMass answered with a triple of their own, but a three-point play from de Vries made it 30-24. The Minutewomen stretched their advantage to 36-29 with 6:29 left in the third. Miami responded with a 9-2 run, behind a three-point play from Tretter and three-straight layups from Scalia and Singer (twice) to knot the game at 38 apiece. Tretter converted her second three-point play of the quarter to give the RedHawks a 41-38 advantage with 90 seconds to play in the third. Miami led 43-40 heading to the fourth.
- A jumper from de Vries spotted Miami a 47-42 advantage two minutes into the final stanza, but a 9-2 UMass run gave the Minutewomen a two-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. UMass stretched their lead to three, 54-51, before de Vries knocked down a triple from the corner to tie the game at 54-54 with four minutes to play. UMass regained the lead, 58-56, but Miami responded quickly as Singer found Tretter for an open triple. A pair of free throws from Singer made it 61-58, but a 5-0 run from the Minutewomen put the RedHawks down two with 11 seconds to play. After a Glenn Box timeout, Tretter drove past her defender and converted a three-point play to spot Miami a one-point lead with four seconds to go. UMass scored with under two seconds to play for the victory.
Game Notes:
- Miami held UMass scores for 7:14 between the first and second quarter.
- Amber Scalia finished the contest with a season-high nine rebounds
- With a three-pointer early in the third quarter, Amber Tretter became the 28th player in Miami history to surpass 1,000 career points. She had 19 points in the second half.
- After committing 12 turnovers in the first half the RedHawks had none in the third quarter and committed just one second-half turnover.
