Miami Wins Best Western Invitational With 3-2 Victory Over Duquesne

OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University volleyball team (5-5) took down Duquesne (7-2) in five sets (25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 20-25, 15-8) to become tournament champions at the Best Western Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Lauren Coyne was named the Best Western Invitational tournament MVP, and Molly Creech was named to the All-Tournament Team.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Duquesne opened with a 6-4 lead. Shortly after, Lauren Coyne's three kills sparked a 5-0 run, putting Miami up 9-6. Molly Creech's solo block and kill kept the RedHawks ahead 14-8. The Dukes rallied, tying the set at 16. Late kills from Lindy Radaszewski and Coyne put Miami up 20-19. Gentry Warrick delivered two crucial blocks, including a solo, to secure a 25-22 victory.
  • Six kills from the RedHawks and an Ellie Hanson service ace gave Miami a 7-4 lead in set two. Chelsea Williams added three kills to hold off the Dukes at 14-12. Duquesne tied it at 17-17, but RedHawk kills and attack errors by the Dukes led to a 25-23 Miami win.
  • Williams' back-to-back kills started set three with a 2-0 Miami lead, but Duquesne answered with a 6-0 run. With the Dukes leading 14-10, Miami closed to 15-14, but Duquesne maintained control. Despite Miami closing within two at 22-20, the Dukes won the set 25-20.
  • The RedHawks' first eight points of the fourth set came from kills to trail 12-8. A collection of attack errors by the Dukes, including a Coyne solo block, brought Miami back in the fight at 15-13. Williams put down a couple of kills with Duquesne leading 20-16 to make it 22-19, but it wasn't enough, as the Dukes closed out the fourth set 25-20.
  • The Red and White took a 5-2 lead after a strong fifth-set start. The Dukes came within one at 6-5 before Williams, Coyne and Creech put down three consecutive kills to make it 9-5. Miami scored the final four points of the set to win the fifth set 15-8.
