OXFORD, Ohio– The RedHawks downed the Akron Zips on Friday, scoring four runs in the eighth to pull off a 9-5 victory.
Evan Appelwick recorded four RBIs for Miami, including a two-run home run. Miami moves to 28-20 with the win (19-6 MAC) while the Zips fall to 16-31 (9-19 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Akron led off the first with a triple to right, but Cooper Katskee rang up two on strikes and forced a lineout to strand the runner.
- The Zips' first run came on a double and a single in the top of the second inning.
- Miami tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Blake Buzzeo led off with a double and Ryan Novak walked. Both advanced on a fielder's choice and Appelwick singled to drive in a run.
- The RedHawks added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Novak reached first on an error and Anthony Zarlingo doubled to put Novak on third. Appelwick hit a sac fly to record his second RBI of the day and David Novak hit a sac fly to extend the lead to 3-1.
- Akron pulled back within one run (3-2) in the sixth after two hits.
- The Zips took a 4-3 lead in the seventh, scoring two runs on two hits.
- Ryan Novak walked to start the bottom of the seventh. Appelwick followed up with a walk and Dominic Krupinski cleared the bases with a go-ahead triple that put the RedHawks back in front, 5-4.
- Akron tied the game in the top of the eighth. The Zips hit a leadoff triple and a single sent the tying run home.
- Three consecutive hits put Miami back ahead in the bottom of the eighth. Buzzeo singled, Dillon Baker doubled to score Buzzeo, and Ryan Novak tripled to score Baker, putting the RedHawks on top 7-5. After Zarlingo reached on a fielder's choice, Appelwick hit his fifteenth homer of the season, extending the lead to four runs at 9-5.
- Carson Byers recorded three outs to cap off the 9-5 victory for Miami.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Appelwick went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs.
- Krupinski went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
- Buzzeo went 3-for-3 with two runs.
- Katskee pitched five innings and held the Zips to four hits and two runs.
