Miami Takes Down EKU 11-1

RICHMOND, Ky.–  Miami defeated Eastern Kentucky 11-1 in eight innings Tuesday after a four-run first inning. Five different RedHawks recorded multiple hits during the contest. Miami moves to 27-20 with the win while the Colonels fall to 10-39.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Miami came out strong, scoring four runs in the first inning. Ryan Novak, Evan Appelwick and David Novak each walked to load the bases with one out. Dominic Krupinski singled, driving in two runs, and Ty Batusich cleared the bases with a single to make it 4-0 and force an early pitching change for the Colonels.
  • Dillon Baker led off the second inning with a home run to left-center to stretch the lead to five runs.
  • David Novak led off the third and crushed a homer to right field, giving the RedHawks a 6-0 lead.
  • Miami extended its lead to 8-0 in the top of the fourth. Baker doubled and scored as Anthony Zarlingo singled up the middle. Appelwick singled to left-center and David Novak singled to score Zarlingo.
  • The Colonels scored their first run in the bottom of the fifth after recording double and a triple.
  • The RedHawks' lead grew to 9-1 in the top of the seventh. Krupinski led off with a walk and Batusich walked after a 10-pitch at-bat. Both runners advanced on a sac bunt by Keenan Proctor. Baker walked to load the bases and Ryan Novak walked to force in the run.
  • Appelwick led off the top of the eighth with a double. Krupinski singled to put runners at the corners and a fielder's choice made it 10-1. Keenan Proctor hit an RBI double and Charlie Dieruf recorded three outs to cap off an 11-1 eight-inning victory for Miami.

  • Baker went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
  • Krupinski went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
  • Appelwick went 2-for-3 with two runs.
  • Batusich recorded three RBIs.
  • David Novak went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
  • Proctor went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Hayden Cuthbertson let up no hits and no runs in 3.0 innings while recording five strikeouts.
 
UP NEXT: The RedHawks will return home for a three-game homestand against the Akron Zips, their final home series of the season. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday.
