KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Miami University baseball team dropped 9-2 to Tennessee Friday in the second game of the Knoxville Regional. Miami falls to 35-22, while the Vols improve to 44-16.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Ryan Novak got the Red and White going in the first inning with a single to right field. An error by Tennessee's pitcher led to Ryan Novak advancing to third base. Anthony Zarlingo went on to walk, giving Miami runners on first and third base. The Volunteers managed to get out of the top of the first inning without giving up any runs.
- The Volunteers recorded a home run to left field in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs and a runner on second base, Tennessee grounded out to end the inning.
- Dillon Baker opened the third inning with a double to left field. Evan Appelwick got to first base after being walked, and David Novak followed this up by bringing Baker home after crushing a double to right field.
- With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning, the Volunteers scored two runs thanks to a walk and sacrifice fly to take a 3-1 advantage.
- A flurry of singles in the bottom of the fourth inning increased Tennessee's lead to 8-1.
- A double and a single resulted in Tennessee extending its lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- Appelwick smashed a home run in the top of the ninth inning to cut into the lead at 9-2. Despite a strong effort, the RedHawks came no closer, falling 9-2.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Appelwick is now one home run away from tying the all-time single-season record for home runs.
- Appelwick went 1-for-3 with one run, one RBI and one BB.
UP NEXT: Miami will face Wake Forest on Saturday, May 31 in Knoxville. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. in an elimination contest.
