RedHawks Beat Rockets 10-4 to Advance in MAC Tourney

AVON, Ohio – Miami cruised past the Toledo Rockets in a 10-6 ballgame today to advance in the winners' bracket in the MAC tournament. Dominic Krupinski and Anthony Zarlingo were slugging powerhouses for the RedHawks, going 4-for-4 and 4-for-5 for Miami, respectively. Miami improves to 33-21 with the win (23-7 MAC) while the Rockets fall to 29-28 (17-14 MAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hayden Cuthbertson took the mound in the first and held the Rockets scoreless, striking out two batters and sending the third down on a fielder's choice.
  • Three different batters reached the bases for Miami in the bottom of the first, but no one could score.
  • Cuthbertson notched two strikeouts and a lineout in the top of the second, flipping the inning in just eight pitches.
  • Cuthbertson saw three up, and three down again in the third, incurring two groundouts and a strikeout.
  • Miami's offense came alive in the third after Dillon Baker reached first on a throwing error. Anthony Zarlingo singled to right field, advancing Baker to third, and an error on a failed pickoff allowed the game's first run to score.
  • Zarlingo stole third, and Evan Appelwick hit a triple to the centerfield wall, doubling the RedHawks' lead. Dominic Krupinski hit an infield single to score Appelwick and make it 3-0 in favor of RedHawks.
  • Toledo hit back-to-back doubles to start the fourth, scoring one run. A single brought the Rockets within one at 3-2.
  • The RedHawk defense faced just three batters in the fifth, recording three quick outs via a lineout, groundout and flyout.
  • The RedHawks brought the bats in the sixth, putting up a four-piece on five hits. Zarlingo started the rally with a single to left and advanced as Appelwick beat the tag for an infield single. With two outs, Krupinski singled up the middle, bringing Zarlingo around and making it a 4-2 ballgame.
  • Ty Batusich hit a first-pitch single to score Appelwick and promptly stole second base. Tommy Harrison had his first hit of the day, a single to left, to bring home two runs for the RedHawks and make it 7-2.
  • After an HBP and a double, the Rockets scored two runs on a passed ball and a groundout, cutting their deficit to 7-4.
  • Zarlingo hit the team's second triple of the day with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Toledo went on to intentionally walk Appelwick. David Novak blasted a single to right-center, recording two RBIs as both runners finished their lap around the diamond.
  • Still with two outs, Krupinski doubled down the right field line. Batusich beat out the throw to first to record an infield single and send Novak in to score. This capped off the three-run inning for Miami and put them ahead six runs, 10-4.
  • Carson Byers entered the game to pitch in relief for Miami in the top of the seventh. He went three up, and three down to prevent any damage from the Rockets.
  • Byers sent down all three batters he faced in the eighth, keeping the deficit at six runs.
  • The RedHawk defense held off the Rockets in the bottom of the ninth, quickly sending down all three batters they faced in the ninth to secure their first win of the tournament.
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
  • Zarlingo went 4-for-5 with three runs.
  • Appelwick went 2-for-4 with three runs.
  • Krupinski went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.
  • Cuthbertson pitched 6.0 innings, holding the Rockets to three earned runs and recording five strikeouts.
  • Byers pitched 3.0 innings with 31 pitches, giving up just one hit.
 
UP NEXT: With today's win, Miami has advanced to the next round of the 2025 MAC tournament. The RedHawks will play the winner of today's 2 p.m. game between Kent State and Ball State tomorrow at 2 p.m. A win tomorrow would clinch a championship game berth.
