OXFORD, Ohio – Miami took care of the Zips Saturday, defeating Akron 8-5. Evan Appelwick posted three hits and four RBIs during the contest, including a home run. Miami moves to 29-20 with the win (20-6 MAC) while the Zips fall to 16-32 (9-20 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Evan Appelwick put the exclamation point on an 11 pitch at bat with a bomb to left field to give Miami a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Akron led off the fifth with a double and followed up with a two-run homer to take a 2-1 lead.
Miami battled back in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Novak led off with a double to right center, and Anthony Zarlingo hit a bunt single to advance Novak. Appelwick drove in Miami's second run of the day with a single through the left. David Novak advanced both runners on a bunt. Dominic Krupinski singled to right, scoring Zarlingo and reclaiming the lead at 3-2.
The RedHawks scored five runs in the seventh. Blake Buzzeo walked and scored as Dillon Baker doubled to left. Ryan Novak took an HBP, and both runners advanced on a failed pickoff. Appelwick singled to score two more runs. Krupisnki walked, and Ty Batusich took an HBP to load the bases. Two wild pitches made it 8-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Zips scored on an RBI double. They then cut the deficit to three with a two-run homer, but were unable to close the rest of the gap.

MIAMI GAME NOTES:

Appelwick went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, two runs and a homer.
Clayton Burke pitched seven innings and held the Zips to three hits and three runs.
Baker hit his 22nd double of the season, tying Tommy Nurre (2008) for the most in a single season in RedHawk history.

UP NEXT: Miami will look to take the sweep opportunity tomorrow in game three against Akron, their final home game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
