Miami Defeats CMU in 10 Innings, 7-6

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. –  Miami took down Central Michigan Saturday, defeating the Chippewas 7-6 in ten innings to win the three-game series. Ryan Novak had three hits during the game, including two doubles. The RedHawks move to 21-18 (16-5 MAC) with the win while CMU falls to 16-24 (8-10 MAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The RedHawks scored first in the top of the second. David Novak walked, and Ryan Novak singled. Keenan Proctor recorded an RBI, hitting a single to right field to make it 1-0.
  • Miami extended its lead to 2-0 in the third. With Ty Batusich on second as a result of a fielder's choice and a groundout, Evan Appelwick singled through to left, bringing Batusich around to score.
  • CMU found its first run in the bottom of the third, making it 2-1 with a single and an RBI triple.
  • Miami stretched the lead back to two runs in the top of the fourth. Ryan Novak earned his second hit of the day, a leadoff double. Blake Buzzeo and Dillon Baker walked to load the bases, and Batusich walked to force in a run and make it 3-1.
  • The Chippewas pulled back within one run in the sixth inning, scoring on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.
  • Central Michigan made it a tie ballgame in the bottom of the ninth, putting together a string of three hits to score and make it 3-3.
  • Miami responded with a four-run rally in the top of the tenth. Leadoff batter David Novak gave Miami a lead with a solo homer. Ryan Novak doubled to center field and advanced to third as Dominic Krupinski reached first on a throwing error. Proctor loaded the bases with an HBP. Baker walked to make the score 5-3, and Batusich singled to center, scoring two runners to take a 7-3 lead heading to the bottom of the tenth.
  • Central Michigan hit back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the tenth, and a homer brought them back within one run, 7-6. Kaden Pfeffer entered the game and saw three up, three down to close out a 7-6 win.
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
  • Ryan Novak went 3-for-5 with two runs and two doubles.
  • Pfeffer earned his first save of the season, recording the final three outs, which included one strikeout.
 
UP NEXT: The RedHawks will return home for a stand-alone game against Bellarmine on Tuesday, April 22. Conference play resumes on Friday, April 25 with a three-game road series at Ohio.
