OXFORD, Ohio – Miami won its series against Kent State on Sunday, winning a 9-7 ballgame after putting up 12 hits.
Dillon Baker had three hits on five at bats, batting in three runs and scoring two. His accolades also included a two-run homer. The RedHawks move to 19-16 (14-4 MAC) with the triumph while the Golden Flashes fall to 21-13 (11-4 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Clayton Burke started on the mound for Miami and sent three batters down on strikes in the top of the first inning.
- Dillon Baker hit a leadoff double in the top of the first. Evan Appelwick walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Ty Batusich recorded the first RBIs of the game as he put Miami ahead 2-0, hitting a single to center that brought both runners around to score.
- Jake Vrlak landed his first ever hit at McKie Field in the bottom of the second, a single to center field. The hit set up Dillon Baker to crush a two-run homer, his eighth home run of the season, to double the RedHawks' lead to 4-0.
- Kent State's first run came in the top of the third to make it 4-1. After a single through the left side, a double to center field drove the run in.
- Dominic Krupisnki led off the bottom of the fourth with a double on a 1-1 count. Jake Vrlak hit a sac bunt, allowing him to advance to third, and Dillon Baker doubled to left-center to extend Miami's lead to 5-1.
- The Flashes added two in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on a leadoff HBP with a triple and a sac fly to pull within two runs, 5-3.
- The RedHawk offense surged in the fifth inning, scoring four runs off four hits. David Novak singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Batusich walked, and Ryan Novak was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.
- Krupinski singled, sending David Novak in to score. Batusich was called out at the plate on the play. Jake Vrlak doubled through the right side, sending Krupinski and Ryan Novak home. Blake Buzzeo singled to left, driving in Vrlak to secure a 9-3 lead.
- Kent State hit a three-run homer and a solo homer on back-to-back at-bats in the bottom of the ninth. Carson Byers came in to record the final out and earn the save in the 9-7 victory.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Baker went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs.
- Krupinski went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.
- Jake Vrlak went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
- Austin Berggren pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, holding Kent State to just one hit.
UP NEXT: Miami is set to face the Kentucky Wildcats Tuesday for a stand-alone game on the road in Lexington at 7 p.m. They will then travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for a three-game conference series against the Chippewas beginning on Thursday, April 17 at 3 p.m.
