OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University baseball team opened conference play Friday with a 5-0 shutout victory over the Toledo Rockets.
Hayden Cuthbertson pitched six full innings for the RedHawks, improving his record to 1-0. Miami moves to 6-7 (1-0 MAC) with the victory while Toledo falls to 4-8 (0-1 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cuthbertson took the mound for Miami to start the game. He held the Rockets scoreless on just three hits during the first five innings, during which he recorded six strikeouts.
- Miami scored the game's first run on a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth. Anthony Zarlingo hit a bunt single and stole second. Dominic Krupinski singled to left field and stole second. Blake Buzzeo hit a sac fly to pull Miami ahead 1-0.
- With the help of a diving catch by Buzzeo, Cuthbertson recorded three straight outs in the top of the sixth, capping off an 82-pitch outing and six-inning shutout.
- The RedHawks extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, David Novak and Evan Appelwick both walked. Zarlingo put a ball straight down the right field line for a triple that scored two.
- Miami added an insurance run to make it 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Novak doubled to right field and advanced on a wild pitch. Ty Batusich hit a sac fly to score Novak.
- The RedHawks scored the last run of the game in the bottom of the eighth. Zarlingo hit an infield double and Krupinski drove him home with a double to right field.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Cuthbertson pitched 6.0 innings, holding the Rockets to three hits and zero runs. He struck out six batters along the way.
- Carson Byers pitched 3.0 innings, holding the Rockets hitless and scoreless. He struck out two batters.
- Zarlingo went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
- Krupinski went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
