RedHawks Sweep Broncos, Earn 10th MAC Win

OXFORD, Ohio – Miami swept the Western Michigan Broncos Saturday, winning both games of a doubleheader 13-1 and 12-2. In game one, Clayton Burke pitched a complete game, giving up just one run. In game two, Ty Batusich highlighted the stat sheet for Miami with three RBIs and two walks. Miami improves to 15-12 (10-2 MAC) with the wins while WMU falls to 6-19 (4-8 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
  • Dillon Baker hit his sixth home run of the year to open the bottom of the first inning, securing an early 1-0 lead. Ty Batusich took an HBP, Anthony Zarlingo singled and Evan Appelwick walked to load the bases. David Novak hit a bases-clearing double to pull Miami ahead 4-0 through one inning.
  • A double down the right field line put Western Michigan on the board in the top of the fourth, 4-1.
  • Miami answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Blake Buzzeo and Anthony Zarlingo each singled, putting runners at the corners. Evan Appelwick singled to send Buzzeo to the plate to score and make it 5-1.
  • The RedHawks had a monstrous fifth inning, scoring seven runs. Krupsinski led off for Miami with a double. Ryan Novak took an HBP and Dom Magliocca hit a bunt single to load the bases. One run walked in as Dillon Baker took an HBP. Batusich singled to drive in two more. Zarlingo singled to reload the bases, and Appelwick walked to put Miami ahead 9-1. With the bases still loaded, Krupinski came up to bat again and hit a triple to right-center, a three-RBI hit, to put Miami up by 11 runs, 12-1.
  • Batusich made it a 13-1 ballgame with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Clayton Burke pitched two strikeouts and a groundout in the top of the seventh, enacting the run-rule and securing a Miami victory. This marked a 107-pitch complete game.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
  • Batusich and Appelwick each walked in the bottom of the first. Anthony Zarlingo came up with his fifth hit of the day, a double, to pull the RedHawks ahead 1-0.
  • The Broncos put up two runs in the bottom of the second after a triple, a single and a double.
  • The RedHawks answered with four runs in the top of the third. Ryan Novak walked. Blake Buzzeo singled to center, and both runners advanced on a flyout. Batusich singled, batting in two runs, and Evan Appelwick hit his 13th homer of the season, adding two for Miami to make it 5-2.
  • WMU loaded the bases in the top of the third, but Miami turned a 4-6 double play to escape the jam.
  • Miami stretched its lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs. Krupinski took an HBP and Ryan Novak singled. Drew Phillips took an HBP to load the bases. Blake Buzzeo singled, scoring Krupinski. Baker singled to center to score Novak. Batusich took an HBP, forcing Phillips home. Anthony Zarlingo hit a sac fly that scored Baker.
  • Scoring resumed in the bottom of the sixth as Miami added three runs. David Novak doubled and Krupinski walked. Ryan Novak walked to load the bases. Phillips and Buzzeo each drove in one run via a sacrifice fly, and Baker doubled to made it a 12-2 lead.
  • The RedHawks fended off the Broncos in the top of the seventh. The run-rule was implemented, finalizing the win for Miami.

  • Baker went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.
  • Batusich went 1-for-2 with three RBIs, two runs, and two walks.
  • Appelwick went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, a run, and two walks.
  • Zarlingo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
  • Ryan Novak went 1-for-1 with three runs and two walks.
  • Blake Buzzeo went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run.
  • Patrick Mastrian pitched 5.0 innings, giving up one hit and no runs while striking out four.
 
UP NEXT:
The RedHawks will welcome the Cincinnati Bearcats on Tuesday, April 1, for a single-game series at home. Conference play will resume on Friday, April 4, with a three-game road series against the Bowling Green Falcons.
