Miami Takes Two Games in Doubleheader Against EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Miami took two wins from Eastern Michigan Friday, sweeping a doubleheader against the Eagles with scores of 14-11 and 18-7. Evan Appelwick hit three home runs throughout the day, including a grand slam in game one. Miami moves to 12-10 (7-1 MAC) with the wins while EMU drops to 9-10 (5-3 MAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • The RedHawks scored three runs in the top of the first on one swing by David Novak. Anthony Zarlingo led off with a walk, Ty Batusich doubled to right center and Novak homered to grab the 3-0 lead.
  • EMU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning after a single, a double and a three-run home run to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Miami added two runs in the top of the second, this time on a two-run homer by Zarlingo that scored Tommy Harrison.
  • The Eagles responded with one run off three hits in the bottom of the second to make the score 5-4 through two innings.
  • Miami added one run in the third to bring the score to 6-4. Appelwick doubled to right center, and Ryan Novak singled to send Appelwick to home plate.
  • Cooper Katskee pitched three straight outs for the RedHawks in the bottom of the third. One EMU batter reached first base on an error in the bottom of the fourth, but Miami's defense turned a double play to end the inning.
  • The RedHawks hit two grand slams during the fifth inning. Appelwick led off the inning with a walk, and Ryan Novak singled. Dominic Krupinski was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Harrison hit the first four-run blast of the inning to pull Miami's lead to 10-4. Justin Gorski, Zarlingo and David Novak walked to load the bases again. Appelwick, who had led off the inning, put an exclamation point on the rally with a grand slam, his 10th home run of the year, to put Miami up 14-4.
  • Katskee saw three up and three down, pitching a groundout and two swinging strikeouts to render the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Eagles hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to pull back within nine runs, 14-5.
  • EMU rallied in the bottom of the seventh, taking six runs off Miami on six hits, an HBP and an error.
  • Landon Fulk entered the game in relief for Miami in the eighth and managed three straight outs, including one strikeout, to hold the score at 14-11.
  • The RedHawks turned a double play and a groundout to round out the 14-11 ballgame.
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME ONE):
  • Zarlingo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs.
  • Appelwick went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs.
  • Ryan Novak went 3-for-5 with one RBI and a run.
  • Harrison went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Miami took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Zarlingo walked and advanced on an error. Appelwick singled to drive in Zarlingo.
  • EMU tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, scoring after a double and a single.
  • EMU hit a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1.
  • Miami put together a 10-run rally in the top of the third. David Novak and Appelwick had back-to-back homers to lead off the inning. Ryan Novak and Krupinski advanced, and Harrison singled to score one run. Christopher Roa walked, and two more runs came in on a walk and a wild pitch. Batusich drove in Blake Buzzeo and Roa with a single, and Appelwick crushed his second home run of the day, a three-run homer, to put Miami up 11-2.
  • EMU scored three runs in the bottom of the third via a three-run home run after Miami put two on base via a walk.
  • Miami stretched their lead to 15-5 in the top of the fifth with four runs on three hits. Batusich singled to right field. David Novak took an HBP and Appelwick walked to load the bases. Ryan Novak hit a sac fly to drive Batusick back to the plate. Krupinski singled to score Appelwick and David Novak, and Harrison singled to score Krupinski.
  • Miami loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, as Buzzeo, Zarlingo and Batusich all walked. A walk and a wild pitch scored Buzzeo and Zarlingo, and a sac fly by Appelwick scored Batusich to make the score 18-5.
  • The Eagles answered with two runs after Miami let up a hit, two walks, an HBP and a wild pitch. This brought the score to 18-7.
  • Patrick Mastrian took the mound for the RedHawks in the bottom of the 7th and saw 3 up and 3 down, pitching a strikeout, a flyout and a groundout. This enacted the run rule and rounded out an 18-7 victory for Miami.
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME TWO):
  • Batusich went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs.
  • David Novak went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs, two walks, and an HBP.
  • Appelwick went 3-for-3 with six RBIs and three runs.
  • Harrison went 2-four-5 with two RBIs and one run.
  • Mastrian pitched 1.2 innings in relief for Miami. He gave up one hit and zero runs and struck out one batter.
 
UP NEXT: The RedHawks will look to sweep the Eagles Satuday during game three of their series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
