RedHawks Earn Tie in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn.– The Miami University hockey team earned a 1-1 tie at Minnesota Duluth Saturday evening in its final road game of the season. Casper Nassen lit the lamp in the third period to help the RedHawks (3-26-3, 0-21-1 NCHC) grab a point in the conference standings for the second consecutive night. Dominic James scored the only goal for the Bulldogs (12-17-3, 8-12-2 NCHC).

After a scoreless overtime, UMD prevailed in a nine-round shootout (two goals to one), with Nassen again finding the back of the net for Miami in the shootout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 7:35 1st (UMD 1-0) | Miami held the home team without a shot on goal for the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the game, but James broke through to give UMD the lead. The Bulldog captain collected a return pass from Anthony Menghini on a 3-on-2 and got a shot off that deflected up in the air and skidded into the Miami net. Adam Kleber had the second assist on the play.
  • 8:59 3rd (Miami 1-1) | After a scoreless second period, the RedHawks leveled the score midway through the third. Raimonds Vitolins received a pass ahead from Michael Quinn at the edge of the offensive zone and found a cutting Nassen in stride in the middle. Nassen finished past UMD's Adam Gajan to make it 1-1.

NOTES
  • Nassen scored his sixth goal of the season (matching Colby Ambrosio and Ryan Sullivan for the team lead) and equaled his career high with five shots on goal; the freshman forward was named the Third Star of the Game.
  • Vitolins picked up his 10th assist of the season and 30th of his collegiate career while skating in his 100th college game.
  • Quinn also reached double-digits in assists for the year with his 10th helper.
  • Miami went to overtime for the third consecutive road contest.
  • Hampus Rydqvist played his 150th career game in a Miami sweater.
