RedHawks Travel to Face Louisiana

ON TAP: The Miami University women's basketball team begins a three-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Louisiana. Opening tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. as the RedHawks conclude the MAC/SunBelt Challenge.

GOING STREAKING: Enjulina Gonzalez has scored in double figures 16-straight games, dating back to Dec. 1. She has surpassed 20 points seven different times this season, including a season-high 29 points in a win at FIU. The sophomore transfer from Mercer has been named MAC Player of the Week three times and currently ranks third in the MAC in scoring (17.3). Miami is 6-1 this season when she scores 20-plus points.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Amber Tretter has recorded 14 double-doubles in her career, including four this year. On the season she nearly averages a double-double in points (10.9) and rebounds (7.8), despite only playing 27.0 minutes per contest. She ranks fifth in the MAC in rebounding and sixth in blocks (0.9).

ABOUT LOUISIANA: The Ragin' Cajuns are 10-11 overall and 6-6 in Sun Belt play this season. They averaged 63.5 points/game this season and are led by Erica Lafayette, who averages 15.1 ppg. and 4.6 rpg. Lafayette is the lone double-digit scorer on the team, but they do feature seven different players that average 5.8 ppg. or higher.

SERIES HISTORY: This will be the first meeting between the two schools. The Rajin' Cajuns opened the season with a 57-55 loss to Northern Illinois in the first round of the MAC/Sun Belt Challenge.

NOTES FROM WIN OVER EMU: 
• Miami captured its second-straight conference win with a 68-45 victory on Wednesday over Eastern Michigan.
• The RedHawks led 30-24 at halftime, before outscoring the Eagles 25-10 in the third quarter.
• Katey Richason made her first start of the season and recorded a season-high eight rebounds.
• Cori Lard came off the bench to recorded 10 points, five assists and five steals, with zero turnovers. Lard was one of four double-digit scorers: Enjulina Gonzalez (20), Amber Tretter (14) and Maya Chandler (13).
• Miami committed a season-low eight turnovers.

WINNING WITH DEFENSE: Miami ranks atop the conference, allowing 55.8 points per game (25th nationally). The RedHawks have held seven opponents to under 50 points this season.
• Miami has forced 463 turnovers this season, second-best in the conference. The RedHawks are 10-3 on the year when they force their opponent into 20-plus turnovers. 
• Miami leads the conference with 12.1 steals/game and features five players ranked in the top-15: Tamar Singer (2.1, 6th), Cori Lard (1.7, 11th), Enjulina Gonzalez (1.6, 14th), Maya Chandler (1.5, 16th) and Amber Tretter (1.5, 16th).

POINTING TO THE PAINT: Back on Jan. 18, Miami dropped a contest to Buffalo, where the RedHawks attempted a season-high 34 triples (made 9) and recorded just 12 points in the paint. Since that contest, the RedHawks have recorded 166 points in the paint (33.2/game). In each of the past five games, the RedHawks have secured at least 28 points in the paint.

THAT 70'S SHOW: It's not all about defense when it comes to Miami. The RedHawks are a perfect 8-0 this year when they score 70-plus points in a contest. Much of that scoring has come in the first and third quarters. Miami has outscored their opponents 342-267 in the first quarter and 374-303 to begin the second half.
 
CHASING RECORDS: Miami has already surpassed last season's win total (9-20 last year) and at 6-5 in MAC play, the RedHawks have matched last seasons MAC win total (6-12 last season).

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES: Last season Miami averaged 53.9 ppg and allowed 63.8 ppg. for a scoring margin of -9.8/game. This season the script has flipped as the RedHawks average 66.0 ppg. and allow 55.8 ppg. for a scoring margin of +10.2. Between the two seasons, Miami has a 20.0 improvement in scoring margin.

BOMBS AWAY: Miami ranks fifth in the MAC in three pointers made per game (7.2) and are third in percentage made from behind the arc (33.6%). Enjulina Gonzalez (43.8%) ranks second in the MAC and nine different RedHawks shoot at least 30% from long distance. 

1,000 POINT CLUB: Maya Chandler has scored 1,234 career points between three different programs. She has scored 208 points with the RedHawks, had 149 points in one season at SMU and in three years at Loyola-Chicago she scored 877 points and was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in 2020-21. She has played in 138 games throughout her career, making 118 starts.

SINGING HER PRAISES: Freshman Tamar Singer is playing nearly 28 minutes a contest, third best on the team. She ranks eighth in the MAC in assists (4.0), 12th in assist/turnover ratio (1.1) and sixth in steals (2.1). She has scored in double-figures four times this year and has posted at least five assists nine different times.
