RedHawks Split Doubleheader with NKU

OXFORD, Ohio – Miami split a doubleheader against the Northern Kentucky Norse Friday, winning game one 7-1 and falling in game two 19-18. In game one, Dillon Baker and Ty Batusich both hit home runs. In game two, Batusich hit two more home runs and Baker and David Novak each hit one. Miami moves to 4-6 while Wright State moves to 5-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
  • Hayden Cuthbertson took the mound for the RedHawks in the top of the first and recorded three straight outs, including two strikeouts.
  • Baker led off the bottom of the first with a ground-rule double and Anthony Zarlingo singled, but Miami was unable to bring any runners home.
  • Miami took a 1-0 lead after Baker hit a 454-foot home run to left center in the bottom of the third.
  • NKU tied the game 1-1 in the top of the sixth with a solo home run ball to left center.
  • Batusich put Miami ahead 3-1 with a home run to center field that scored himself and Evan Appelwick in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Blake Buzzeo stretched the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double. The double brought home David Novak, who had singled, and Ryan Novak, who had walked.
  • A single, HBP and walk loaded the bases with one out for Miami in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Novak and Buzzeo each walked to round out a final score of 7-1. 
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME ONE):
  • Baker went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
  • Buzzeo went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
  • Cuthbertson pitched 3.2 innings, giving up one hit and no runs while striking out four batters.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
  • NKU scored eight runs in the top of the second inning to pull ahead 8-0. They scored their first run on a solo home run. Miami then walked in a run and gave up a single. A ground rule double scored two more, and two singles and a sac fly scored the final three.
  • The RedHawks answered with five runs in the bottom of the second to make it 8-5. Ryan Novak hit a two-RBI double and later scored on a fielder's choice. Zarlingo hit a ground-rule double that scored one. Appelwick batted in run number five with a sac fly.
  • The Norse hit a home run to center field in the top of the third to extend their lead to 10-5. Two doubles each scored a run to make it 12-5.
  • Miami added two runs in the bottom of the third on a home run from Batusich and a balk, making it 12-7.
  • NKU extended their lead to 14-7 with two singles and a double in the top of the fifth.
  • Miami put up six runs in the bottom of the sixth, making it a 14-13 ballgame. Batusich hit his third homer of the day, a two-run shot. Dom Krupinski singled, and Ryan Novak, who doubled earlier, beat the tag at home plate to score. Buzzeo singled and scored Krupinski. Baker tripled and scored Buzzeo. Zarlingo singled to left, scoring Baker.
  • NKU scored three runs in the top of the seventh on four hits to make it 17-13.
  • NKU scored two runs on two hits in the top of the eighth to make it 19-13.
  • With two aboard, David Novak hit a three-run home run to make 19-16 and pull Miami within three runs.
  • Buzzeo singled, and Baker homered to put Miami within one run at19-18. Miami managed to get a runner on second base, but their rally was cut short.
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME TWO):
  • Baker went 3-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs.
  • Zarlingo went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
  • Batusich went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and the runs.
  • Ryan Novak went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs.
  • Buzzeo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs.
