Miami Drops Two at Rocket City Showcase

MADISON, Ala. – On Saturday afternoon the Miami University softball team faced No. 18 Auburn University at the Rocket City Showcase. After a back-and-forth game with three lead changes, the Tigers eventually took the 11-6 win. Auburn moves to 13-1 on the season. The RedHawks then faced off against the University of Mississippi and fell 7-1. The Rebels move to 10-3 on the season. The RedHawks drop to 3-9.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • In the bottom of the first, a fielding error allowed a run to cross for the Tigers, giving them a 1-0 lead.
  • The RedHawks tied the game up 1-1 in the top of the second when a sacrifice groundout from Mckenna Campbell allowed Jenna Golembiewski to score.
  • In the top of the third, Kaylee Oh hit a home run over center field to also score Danitza Hernandez and give the RedHawks a 3-1 lead.
  • Still in the third, Chloe Parks and Shelby Kunkel both scored on an error and extended the Red and White's lead to 5-1.
  • Ella Carter followed that up with a RBI single that scored Golembiewski and pushed the lead to 6-1.
  • A two RBI single and a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth scored three for the Tigers, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
  • In that same inning, an error allowed two more runs to score, tying the game up 6-6.
  • The Tigers took a 8-6 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI double.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, a RBI single and a two-run homer increased the Tiger's lead to 11-6, which would remain through the end of the game.
 
NOTES:
  • Golembiewski and Kunkel each went 2-for-4 at the plate.
  • Oh notched two RBI and hit her second homer of the season. She is now the fourth member of the RedHawks to secure two home runs on the season.
  • Madilyn Reeves pitched the full game, allowing just eight hits and striking out eight.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • In the bottom of the first, the Rebels jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a sac groundout.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, a hit by pitch allowed the Rebels to double their lead to 2-0.
  • A sac fly out followed up with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fourth extended Ole Miss's lead to 5-0.
  • In the top of the sixth, Golembiewski got the RedHawks on the board, 5-1, with a solo home run.
  • The Rebels scored another on a sac fly in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 6-1 game.
  • Still in that inning, a wild pitch allowed one more to cross home, upping the Ole Miss lead to 7-1, which the Rebels held through the end of the game.

     
NOTES:
  • Golembiewski went 2-for-3 at the plate. 
  • After her blast over right field, Golembiewski leads the RedHawks in home runs this season with three.
  • Léa Chevrier went three innings in the circle, allowing just two hits and striking out one.
  • Shelbie Krieger pitched three innings on the bump, striking out one and allowing only four hits.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks continue their time at the Rocket City Showcase tomorrow, Feb. 23 when they face Mississippi State University at 1:30 p.m. in Madison, Ala.
