Kent, Ohio – The Miami University women's basketball team picked up its fourth-straight win with a 64-62 victory over Kent State on Saturday afternoon.
Enjulina Gonzalez and
Maya Chandler each scored 18 as the RedHawks (15-8, 7-5 MAC) downed the Golden Flashes on the road for the first time since Feb. 17, 2018. Janae Tyler led KSU (16-9, 8-4 MAC) with 18 points.
How it Happened:
- Miami opened the contest on a 9-3 run with triples from Tamar Singer and a pair from Chandler. Kent State responded with five-straight points to close the gap, 9-8 midway through the opening quarter. The Golden Flashes' run continued as they claimed a 13-9 advantage before Emily Bratton's three pointer made it 13-12. KSU led 15-13 after 10 minutes of play.
- Back-to-back buckets from Chandler knotted the game at 17 apiece, but seven-straight from the Flashes forced a Glenn Box timeout with 5:47 left in the second quarter. Bratton and Amber Tretter combined to score Miami's next six points to make it 25-23, but four-straight from KSU extended their advantage, 29-23 later in the first half. Chandler's third triple of the half made it 29-26. Miami trailed 32-27 entering the third quarter.
- Katey Richason knocked in a pair of three pointers, and a jumper from Gonzalez in the first two minutes of the third quarter, spotted Miami a 35-34 lead. KSU answered with back-to-back triples to claim a five-point advantage, but four points from Gonzalez, followed by a layup from Bratton gave Miami a 41-40 lead midway through the quarter. After the media timeout, Gonzalez scored on three-straight possessions and a Chandler 15-foot jumper forced a KSU timeout. Singer's coast-to-coast bucket capped Miami's 16-0 run and gave the RedHawks a 51-40 lead after three quarters of play.
- The Golden Flashes cut the deficit to five points, 51-46 to begin the final stanza as the RedHawks were held scoreless for the first 4:46. A pair of free throws from Ilse de Vries ended the Miami drought and back-to-back buckets from Gonzalez pushed Miami's lead to nine, 57-48, with 3:45 to play. Kent State banked in a triple with five seconds to play to trim Miami's lead to 63-62, but the RedHawks held on for the two-point victory.
