ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands – The Miami University women's basketball team nearly erased a double-digit fourth quarter deficit, falling 71-67 on Friday evening to Washington State. Ilse de Vries had a team-high 16 points for the RedHawks (4-3), while Amber Tretter added 13 points and 15 rebounds. Eleonara Villa had a game-high 27 points for the Cougars (1-6).

How it Happened:

Washington State led 7-2 seven minutes into the contest. Miami recorded its first field goal of the game when Tamar Singer located Tretter in the corner for a triple. Following a WSU free throw, Tretter grabbed an offensive rebound and found Macie Taylor for an open three pointer to knot the game at 8-8. The Cougars finished the quarter on a 7-4 run and led 15-12 after 10 minutes of play.
A Clara Gonzalez Planella triple would tie the score at 17 apiece and on the ensuing possession, Tretter knocked in a triple for Miami's first lead of the game, 20-17 three minutes into the second quarter. WSU responded with a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to claim a 31-24 lead before a layup from Taylor ended the Miami drought. The Cougars led 33-26 at the half.
Amber Scalia scored the first five points of the second half to get Miami within two points. Washington answered with five quick points, but a de Vries triple made it 38-35 early in the third. A fast-break layup from Tretter spotted the Red and White a 45-44 advantage with 90 seconds remaining in the third, but the Cougars went into the final stanza up 48-47.
WSU scored the first six points of the quarter before Taylor's triple made it 54-50. The Cougars added another 6-0 run to go up 60-50 with six minutes to play. Following a Glenn Box timeout, Miami responded with a 14-6 run to close the gap, 66-64 with 1:23 to play. After a WSU layup, the Cougars led by four, but Singer's three-pointer with 14 seconds to play pulled Miami to with one. Washington State split a pair of free throws and Miami was unable to covert on a reverse layup to tie the game as time nearly expired.

Game Notes:

Amber Tretter recorded the 22^nd double-double of her career with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Macie Taylor had nine points in 20 minutes of play.
Ilse de Vries has now scored in double figures in three of the past four games.
Tamar Singer had a game-high six assists and a career-high six rebounds.
