
Miami Comeback Falls Short at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Miami University women's basketball team nearly erased a 16-point fourth quarter deficit before falling 80-75 to Oakland University on Monday night. Tamar Singer had a career-high 18 points and added five assists and six steals, while Brooke Blumenfeld and Amber Scalia finished with 14 and 13 points for the RedHawks (2-1). Layla Gold had 21 points for the Golden Grizzlies (2-1).

How it Happened:
- The RedHawks raced out to an early 8-2 lead with the help of four points from Blumenfeld, but the Golden Grizzlies outscored Miami 20-5 in the final six minutes of the opening quarter.
- Despite six different Miami scorers through the first 15 minutes of play, the RedHawks trailed 34-21 midway through the second quarter. Oakland beat the buzzer to close out the half to head to the locker room with a 41-25 advantage.
- Buckets from Ilse de Vries, Amber Tretter and Singer cut the deficit to 10 two minutes into the third quarter, but eight-straight points from the Grizzlies spotted OU a 49-31 lead with six minutes left in the third. Miami responded with seven points in 60 seconds to make it 49-38, but an OU triple made it 52-38 at the media timeout. Miami got as close as 54-42 before the Grizzlies closed the quarter on an 10-6 run to claim a 64-48 advantage entering the final stanza.
- Miami opened the fourth on a 9-3 run and trailed by 10 with eight minutes to play. A Scalia layup made it 75-66 with 4:16 and a pair of free throws from Mio Sakano cut the deficit to 77-70 with 1:39 to go. A de Vries putback with a minute to go pulled Miami to within five, 77-72, but Oakland broke the press for an easy bucket for a seven-point lead. After a Miami miss, Singer stole a Golden Grizzlies pass and converted it into her second triple of the contest to make it 79-75 with 27 seconds remaining. Miami forced a travel on the ensuing inbounds play, but could not convert as the comeback fell short.
Game Notes:
- Tamar Singer posted a career-best 18 points in the loss. She made a pair of triples and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line.
- For the second-straight game Brooke Blumenfeld scored 14 points.
- Miami had just 12 turnovers for the contest, but were out-rebounded 42-26. The RedHawks forced Oakland into 21 turnovers (came into the game averaging 10 turnovers per game).
- The RedHawks were 15-of-16 from the foul line.
