About Akron
Akron is 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play, which includes a 28-22 victory over Central Michigan last Saturday. Quarterback Ben Finley has thrown for 946 yards and seven touchdowns, while Shammond Cooper is tops on the team with 39 tackles.
Series History Versus Akron
Miami leads the all-time series 23-9-1 and has won seven-straight games in the series overall. The RedHawks are 10-6 against the Zips in Akron.
Last Meeting With The Zips
Rashad Amos rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns and the Miami defense blanked Akron 19-0 back on Nov. 8, 2023. The win over the Zips was the second of five-straight en route to the 2023 MAC Championship victory.
NIU Â Recap
Miami scored 25 unanswered points to rally for a 25-14 victory over Northern Illinois Saturday to begin Mid-American Conference play. Dequan Finn threw for 170 yards and added 90 yards on the ground. NIU raced out to a 14-0 lead with over three minutes left in the first quarter. From that point on, the Miami defense surrendered just 84 yards on 39 plays. Â The defense added an interception, forced fumble, three sacks and six tackles for loss.
Different Rushing Attack
Kenny Tracy was injured on his first carry of the game and Miami's second string tailback, Josh Ringer, was hurt in warm ups, so Miami was forced to find different alternatives on the ground. Dequan Finn and Jordan Brunson combined for 163 yards versus the Huskies and as a team, Miami rushed the ball 50 times for 197 yards last Saturday.
Block Party
For the second-straight week, Miami blocked a punt. Versus Lindenwood, Kam Perry blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown by Jermaine Agee. This week, Agee blocked an NIU punt for a safety. The last time Miami recorded a safety was also at NIU, back in 2022.Â
Special, Special Teams
Miami is one of two schools (James Madison) this season to record a kick return for a touchdown and block multiple punts. In fact, Miami is the only school in the country to have a special teams unit that has scored via the kick return (100-yards by Keith Reynolds vs. UNLV), punt block (Jermaine Agee 8-yard return vs. Lindenwood) and safety (blocked punt by Agee through the back of the end zone).
10,000-Yard Club
With 260 total yards on Saturday versus NIU, Finn eclipsed 10,000 total yards for his career. It's the second-straight year a RedHawk has surpassed 10,000 yards after Brett Gabbert finished his career with 11,296 total yards.
Lights, 'Kam'era, Action
Kam Perry currently averages 28.5 yards per reception, which ranks first in the country. After posting just 10 catches for 166 yards last season, the junior has already recorded three 100-yard games this season. He had 108 yards at Rutgers, 122 versus UNLV and 122 against Lindenwood.
Magic Trick
Adam Trick currently ranks 16th nationally with 4.0 sacks and has nearly surpassed his career best (4.5), set last season. He posted 2.0 sacks at Wisconsin and has recorded sacks in each of the past two contests versus Lindenwood and NIU. Trick and the RedHawks have 16 sacks.
Finn To Win
While Dequan Finn has made just four career starts as a member of the RedHawks, the seventh-year quarterback does not lack experience.
• Throughout his career he has thrown for 8,025 yards and 69 touchdown passes in 52 career games.
• He has added 2,116 rushing yards and 28 scores on the ground.Â
• Most of that damage came during his time at Toledo. In 45 career games with the Rockets, Finn threw for 7,074 yards and 63 scores, while adding 1,840 yards and 25 touchdowns on the ground.Â
• He earned first-team All-MAC and was the MAC Player of the Year in 2023 and is the only player in Toledo football history to throw for over 2,000 yards and rush for 500 yards in multiple seasons (2021, 2022, 2023).
• Finn's 97 career total touchdowns (68 passing, 28 rushing) ranks first among active players in the NCAA. The next closest is Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia (95 total touchdowns).
• In his career he has combined for 10,137 yards in 1,476 total plays.
New-Look Offensive LineÂ
Miami's OL lost one player to the transfer portal, while four others graduated following the 2024 season. In all, those five players started a combined 166 career games for the RedHawks. Miami's 2025 offensive line will have a much different feel. Eric Smith, Kris Manu, Austin Uke and Greg Smith Jr. all made their first collegiate start in the season opener at Wisconsin, while Drew Terrill started his second career game. In all, Miami's offensive line has started a combined 26 games.
