TOLEDO, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team (11-11, 5-5 MAC) won a five-set match (27-25, 19-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11) against Toledo (16-6, 7-3 MAC) on Friday night at Savage Arena. Offensively, Molly Creech (19), Chelsea Williams (17) and Lindy Radaszewski (13) led the RedHawks in kills, while Hayden Hicks dished out 29 assists. Defensively, Gentry Warrick put down seven blocks, and Anna McClure added 17 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Toledo opened the first set with a 5-0 lead. Numerous kills from the RedHawks kept them in the fight at 12-7. A Lauren Coyne kill and back-to-back attack errors from the Rockets brought Miami within three at 13-10. The Red and White went on to even the score at 17-17 and 21-21 before taking their first lead of the set thanks to a Toledo attack error at 23-22. The Rockets looked to end the set after taking a 25-24 lead, but the RedHawks answered with three straight points to secure a 27-25 win.
- Building on their first-set momentum, three kills from Chelsea Williams at the start of the second set gave Miami a 3-2 advantage. With the score tied at six apiece, Toledo jumped ahead 9-6. A collection of kills from Williams and Creech kept things close at 15-11. The Rockets went on to stretch their lead to 20-13, and despite a strong push from the Red and White, Toledo took the second set 25-19.
- As the third set began, the RedHawks started strong with a 10-5 lead. The Rockets came within 10-8 when a Radaszewski kill and Warrick service ace kept the RedHawks ahead 12-8. Toledo went on to reclaim the lead for the first time since the start of the set at 15-14. Two service aces from Kamryn Utley and two kills from Williams put the score at 19-16 in favor of the RedHawks. Despite a strong push from the Rockets, Miami won the third set thanks to three late kills from Creech.
- The battle continued into the fourth set, with the Red and White leading 6-5 before Toledo responded with a 4-0 run. The Rockets looked to extend their lead at 14-9 before a Coyne kill, along with a block from Warrick and Radaszewski, kept Toledo's lead to just three points. Miami went on to knot the score up at 19-19, but the Rockets ultimately earned a 25-22 fourth-set victory.
- The RedHawks' first three points of the final set came from kills to put the score at 3-3. Toledo looked to pull away at 9-6, when the Red and White used a 5-0 run to jump ahead 11-9. The Rockets tied things up at 11-11 before the RedHawks went on another scoring run thanks to a Radaszewski kill, and attack errors from Toledo that gave Miami a 15-11 fifth-set win.
NOTES:
- Creech's 19 kills (most of her career) and Warrick's seven blocks led all players.
- Lindsay Kahren and Utley each led the RedHawks with two service aces.
