TOLEDO, Ohio – The Miami University women's basketball team erased an 18-point first half deficit, but it wasn't enough as the RedHawks dropped a 64-59 decision to the Toledo Rockets on Wednesday evening.
Enjulina Gonzalez had 19 points, while
Tamar Singer added 14 points and six assists for Miami (11-8, 4-5 MAC). Kendall Carruthers had 17 points for the Rockets (14-5, 6-3 MAC).
How it Happened:
- Toledo opened the contest a perfect 3-for-3 from long distance and raced out to a 16-9 lead midway through the first quarter. A layup from Gonzalez closed the gap, 18-12, but back-to-back Toledo buckets to end the quarter spotted UT an early 10-point advantage.
- Miami struggled on the offensive end to begin the second quarter as Toledo stretched their advantage, 28-13 with six minutes left in the half. Gonzalez knocked in a 15-foot jumper for Miami's first field goal of the quarter and Maya Chandler converted a layup on Miami's following possession to trail by 11. Toledo responded with an 8-1 run to claim their largest lead of the half, 36-18 with 2:22 to play. A triple from Chandler and four points in the closing minute from Gonzalez sent Miami to the locker room down 36-25.
- The Rockets went up 14 two minutes into the second half before seven quick points from Singer, Katey Richason and Amber Tretter cut the deficit in half, 41-34. Toledo answered quickly with a 5-0 run to once again go up double figures, 46-34 at the 4:55 mark of the third quarter. Miami closed on an 11-2 run, which included seven points from Singer as Miami trailed 48-45 entering the final stanza.
- A UT jumper to begin the fourth spotted the Rockets a five-point lead before six-straight points from Chandler and Tretter gave Miami just their second lead of the contest, 51-50 with 7:18 to play. Toledo regained the lead moments later and were up 60-57 with 48 seconds to play. Gonzalez snuck past a pair of defenders for a reverse layup to make it 60-59 with 28 seconds to go. After a pair of Toledo free throws, Tretter's three pointer was a tad long as the RedHawks comeback came up just short.
Game Notes:
- Tamar Singer scored a career-high 14 points and added six assists, three rebounds and four steals.
- Toledo out-rebounded the RedHawks 39-22, but Miami forced 18 Toledo turnovers to just nine for the Red and White. Miami scored 22 points off of those 18 Toledo turnovers.
