KALAMAZOO, Mich.– Ryan Sullivan produced the first multi-goal game of his college career, but the Miami University hockey team came up short at No. 3/4 Western Michigan Friday night, falling by a score of 8-3.
Christophe Fillion added a goal for the RedHawks (3-18-2, 0-13-0 NCHC) to go along with Sullivan's two. Owen Michaels had a pair of goals to lead the Broncos (16-4-1, 9-1-1 NCHC) offensively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 7:33 1st (WMU 1-0) | The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the first period as Iiro Hakkarainen won the puck along the right boards and knocked it ahead to Tim Washe. Washe's return feed across the crease set up Hakkarainen for a tap-in goal. Tristan Lemyre had the second assist on the play.
- 12:28 1st (WMU 2-0) | The home team was credited with its second goal of the game after a video review, as officials ruled that Michaels located the puck sitting behind Miami's Ethan Dahlmeir and pushed it across the goal line. Matteo Costantini and Alex Bump provided the assists.
- 14:34 1st (WMU 3-0) | Western Michigan stretched the lead with a power-play goal two minutes later. Samuel Sjolund relayed the puck from the point to Bump on his left, and Bump then found Liam Valente across the zone in the far faceoff circle for a quick one-timer.
- 3:34 2nd (Miami 3-1) | Miami got off to a good start in the second period and got on the board in a matter of minutes. Colby Ambrosio sent the puck into the offensive zone, and Matt Choupani fought to keep it alive and maintain possession. Choupani's ensuing long-range shot was redirected in mid-air by Sullivan to make it 3-1.
- 3:58 2nd (WMU 4-1) | Western Michigan responded quickly, striking back to restore a three-goal cushion. The Broncos repeatedly cycled the puck back and forth around the end boards with Washe ultimately sliding a pass to Wyatt Schingoethe in front to finish. Joona Väisänen also picked up an assist.
- 5:04 2nd (WMU 5-1) | The Broncos capitalized on their second power play of the night, converting another special-teams goal. After WMU won an offensive-zone faceoff, Bump passed the puck to the point, received it back via Sjolund and Valente, and then skated in to slide a shot past Dahlmeir.
- 0:15 3rd (Miami 5-2) | Sullivan lit the lamp again on the opening shift of the third period. Dylan Moulton snatched the puck in the neutral zone and sent it ahead to Ambrosio, who then passed along the blue line to Sullivan. The Miami captain raced forward and deposited a shot over Western's Cameron Rowe.
- 3:18 3rd (WMU 6-2) | Western Michigan answered back with a quick-developing 3-on-2. A give-and-go between Bump and Costantini set up Michaels on their right for a score. '
- 10:37 3rd (Miami 6-3) | A 2-on-1 break turned into a goal for Miami, as Choupani picked up his second assist of the night with a perfect backdoor feed to Fillion. Rihards Simanovičs sent the initial pass ahead and was rewarded with his first assist of the season.
- 16:36 3rd (WMU 7-3) | Sjolund made it 7-3 with a shot from the top of the zone off a long rebound of Väisänen's shot attempt. Garrett Szydlowski worked the puck loose initially after a battle in the corner and also picked up an assist.
- 17:26 3rd (WMU 8-3) | The Broncos concluded the scoring less than a minute later, as Cole Crusberg-Roseen took a feed from Schingoethe in the middle of the rink, made a move and laid off a pass to a trailing Zach Nehring for the game's final goal.
