RedHawks Struggle Late in Loss at Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY – The Miami University women's basketball team led for the first 35 minutes of action, but a 16-0 University at Buffalo run to close out the game doomed the RedHawks, 59-51. Enjulina Gonzalez led the way with 16 points and four assists for Miami (10-6, 3-3 MAC), while Kirsten Allen's 29 points was tops for the Bulls (15-2, 4-2 MAC).
 
How it Happened:
  • Gonzalez scored eight of Miami's first 10 points, helping the RedHawks to a 10-6 advantage midway through the first quarter. Miami finished on an 8-2 run, led by back-to-back triples from Amber Tretter and Cori Lard late in the first. The RedHawks led 18-11 entering the second.
  • Gonzalez and Maya Chandler knocked in a pair of three-pointers to begin the second and Miami held the Bulls scoreless for the first 3:31 of the quarter to open up a 24-11 lead. UB ended the scoring drought with a deep three pointer before Lard connected on her second triple of the half to maintain the 13-point lead. Buffalo ended the quarter on a 6-3 run for a 10-point halftime lead for the Red and White.
  • Ilse de Vries drilled a pair of three-pointers in the first four minutes of the second half and following a pair of free throws from Amber Tretter spotted Miami a 42-29 lead midway through the quarter. Miami committed six turnovers in the final four minutes of the third, resulting in a 10-4 UB run to close out the third. Miami let 46-39 with 10 minutes to play.
  • Despite a Chandler three pointer to begin the final stanza, a 12-5 Buffalo run in the first five minutes tied the game at 51 apiece. UB closed the contest with eight more points, holding the RedHawks scoreless for the final 7:10 of the game for the victory.
 
Game Notes:
  • Miami shot a season-high 34 three pointers
  • Buffalo converted 18-of-22 free throws, while Miami was just 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.
