DENVER– The Miami University hockey team returned to action Friday night at No. 6/6 Denver but fell by a score of 4-1 at Magness Arena.
Bruno Bruveris was impressive in net, stopping 32 of 35 shots for the RedHawks (3-14-2, 0-9-0 NCHC).
Colby Ambrosio lit the lamp for Miami to pull the visitors within one goal heading into the final period before the Pioneers (16-5-0, 5-4-0 NCHC) put the game away late.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1:15 2nd (Denver 1-0) | After a scoreless first period, the Pioneers took advantage of a five-minute major penalty at the 0:28 mark of the middle frame to collect a pair of goals. Aidan Thompson opened the scoring from the top of the left circle, blasting a shot off the post and in. Carter King and Zeev Buium assisted on the play.
- 3:35 2nd (Denver 2-0) | Eric Pohlkamp doubled the Pios' lead just over two minutes later with another power-play goal. Pohlkamp received a pass across the middle of the zone from Jake Fisher and knocked the puck from his skate to his stick for a quick finish. Samu Salminen was credited with the secondary assist.
- 18:32 2nd (Miami 2-1) | The RedHawks battled back to halve the deficit in the final 90 seconds of the period. Dylan Moulton retrieved the puck in the neutral zone and fired a pass ahead to Raimonds Vitolins at the blue line. Vitolins then connected with Ambrosio in stride as the speedster raced between two defenders before ripping a shot past DU's Matt Davis.
- 9:26 3rd (Denver 3-1) | The RedHawks had several chances to find the equalizer in the first half of the third period, but Denver's Jack Devine made it a two-goal game near the midway mark of the stanza. A pass from Thompson in the center of the rink to Buium on the wing sparked a 4-on-2 break, with Devine then scoring on a shot that redirected off a RedHawk defender and into the net.
- 18:07 3rd (Denver 4-1) | Miami pulled Bruveris with approximately three minutes remaining in the game in search of a comeback, and an unassisted empty-net tally from Buium down the stretch accounted for the final score.
