EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Miami University volleyball team (3-1) dropped to Samford (3-0) in a five-set match (13-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 12-15) on Friday afternoon in its first match of the Dunn Hospitality Tournament. Sophomores
Raegan Lantz (15) and
Chelsea Williams (14) led the RedHawks in kills.
Gentry Warrick provided a strong showing on defense as she led all players in the match with six blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Samford built an early 8-3 lead to start the opening set. A kill from Warrick kept Miami within four at 9-5. The Bulldogs went on to find their rhythm, taking the first set 25-13.
- The teams went back and forth in the second set. Samford pushed ahead to a 19-15 lead, but Miami tied the set at 19 apiece. The Bulldogs outscored the RedHawks 6-2 down the stretch to take the second set, 25-21.
- Samford led 4-2 at the start of the third set before Miami went on a 5-1 run. A flurry of kills from Lantz sparked the RedHawks offense to a 16-11 advantage. Williams joined the offensive showing with back-to-back kills to make it 18-13. A pair of service aces from Warrick and a kill from Lydia Michelin gave Miami a 25-20 third-set win.
- The fourth set started off tight, as the score was 5-5. Numerous errors by the Bulldogs and a couple service aces gave Miami a 14-8 lead halfway through the set. Miami closed the fourth set on a 7-2 run to win 25-15. Ana Vetter put down two kills to secure the set for the Red and White.
- In the final set, Samford jumped out to a 5-3 lead, but Miami fired back by outscoring the Bulldogs 7-1 to lead 10-6. Samford responded by tying the set at 10-10. The Bulldogs scored the final three points to take the fifth set, 15-12.
