OXFORD, Ohio– Dom Dzioban hit a career-long 47-yard field goal on the final play of regulation to force overtime and followed it with a 43-yard kick in the extra session to lift the Miami University football team to a dramatic 23-20 win over Massachusetts Saturday afternoon.
Keyon Mozee led the RedHawks (1-3) offensively with 114 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Jakobie Keeney-James finished with 150 receiving yards and a score for the Minutemen (1-4).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Miami struck first, taking over in UMass territory midway through the first period after an exchange of punts. Four plays later, Mozee raced 27 yards up the middle for the game's opening touchdown and a 7-0 RedHawk lead.
- The visitors responded with points on each of their next two drives, following a 64-yard touchdown catch by Keeney-James with a 45-yard field goal that made it 10-7 UMass.
- The RedHawks came back to knot the score at 10-all with 2:58 left in the half, as Dzioban drilled a 37-yard field goal to cap a six-play, 47-yard drive and pull Miami even.
- The home team had a chance to go ahead at the end of the half, but an interception near the goal line ended the scoring threat in the final seconds before intermission.
- Another big run by Mozee set Miami up to reclaim the lead in the third quarter, as the senior got loose for a 66-yard burst that moved the ball to the UMass nine-yard line. Brett Gabbert then connected with Javon Tracy for a seven-yard touchdown pass to finish the drive and put the RedHawks ahead 17-10 with 3:11 remaining in the period.
- The Minutemen found the end zone on their opening drive of the fourth quarter, marching 61 yards in eight plays for a one-yard plunge by CJ Hester to tie the game at 17 with 8:12 to go.
- UMass re-took the lead with 40 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, as an 11-play scoring drive led to a 23-yard field goal. The RedHawks quickly marched back down the field and Dzioban buried a 47-yard kick with no time left to force overtime.
- The visitors missed a 44-yard field goal in the first overtime, and Dzioban was good from 43 on fourth down to lift Miami to its first win of the season.
