VALPARAISO, Ind. — The Miami University volleyball team (5-4) fell to Cornell (4-2) in three sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon in its final match of the Popcorn Classic.
Sophie Crawford was named to the All-Tournament Team.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Miami opened play by putting down five kills to even the score at 5-5. A service ace from Ava Francis kept the score tied at 13-13. A Caroline Cermack and Raegan Lantz kill pushed Miami ahead 17-15, but the effort wasn't enough, as the Big Red took the first set 25-22.
- A pair of attack errors from Cornell gave the RedHawks a 2-0 lead at the start of the second set. Lantz and Gentry Warrick each knocked down a kill to keep the lead at 8-5. Cornell went on to find some rhythm and took its first lead of the set at 10-9. A trio of kills from Chelsea Williams, a Crawford service ace and an Ana Vetter kill forced a Cornell timeout at 14-12. With the score tied at 21 apiece, the Big Red ended the set on a 4-0 run to claim a 25-21 win.
- Cornell scored the first four points of the third set to jump ahead 4-0. The RedHawks came within two at 8-6 thanks to a kill from Ellie Hanson. The Red and White trailed 16-12 after Lydia Michelin put down a service ace. Miami continued to trail by four at 18-14 but would get no closer, dropping the third set 25-15.
NOTES:
- Warrick led all players with six blocks.
- Anna McClure recorded the game-high 20 digs.
