Virginia Tops Miami 7-0 in NCAA Opener

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.— The No. 21 Miami University softball team dropped its NCAA Tournament opener 7-0 to Virginia Friday afternoon. The RedHawks move to 48-8 on the year, while the Cavaliers improve to 33-18. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Virginia threatened early, loading the bases with no outs in the first inning, but after a sac fly to left, Miami turned a double play to keep the score 1-0.
  • After a pair of second-inning walks, the Cavaliers took a 3-0 lead on a two-out base hit by Jade Hylton.
  • UVA extended the margin with a two-run homer to right-center in the bottom of the fifth, making it 5-0.
  • Hylton hit a sixth-inning home run off the scoreboard in left-center to account for the 7-0 final scoreline.

GAME NOTES:
  • Miami had not been shut out in its previous 68 games (dating to April 26, 2023).
  • Madilyn Reeves went the distance in the circle for the RedHawks, recording one strikeout.
  • Hadley Parisien went 1-for-2, while Kate Kobayashi was 1-for-3 at the plate.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The RedHawks continue play in the double-elimination Knoxville Regional on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against either Dayton or No. 3 Tennessee.
