RedHawks Sweep Bowling Green With a Pair of Shutouts

OXFORD, Ohio– On Tuesday afternoon, the Miami University softball team faced Bowling Green State University in a doubleheader where the RedHawks shut out the Falcons in both games. In game one, Madilyn Reeves' first career no-hitter was the highlight, though a pair of homers from Reagan Bartholomew also helped the Red and White to the 10-0 six-inning win. In game two, the RedHawks took it 9-0 in five innings. Ashley Hitchcock secured a one-hitter and Holly Blaska hit the RedHawks' 100th homer of the season. The RedHawks move to 28-6 on the season (11-0 Mid-American Conference), stretching their win streak to 15 games. Bowling Green drops to 4-20 (1-7 MAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • Sami Bewick walked in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded, causing Jenna Golembiewski to score and giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, Bartholomew smashed one over right-center to double the Miami lead at 2-0.
  • Bartholomew made an incredible double play to get the Red and White out of the top of the third, grabbing a line drive up the middle off a single bounce, stepping on second, then throwing to first.
  • Golembiewski hit a long sac fly in the bottom of the fourth to score Bartholomew and push the lead to 3-0.
  • Kate Kobayashi hit a solo homer over right center in the bottom of the fifth to up the lead to 4-0.
  • In that same inning, Bewick hit a sac groundout to score pinch runner Kari Krueger and make it a 5-0 game.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Golembiewski and Karli Spaid ripped back-to-back solo homers to widen the deficit to 7-0.
  • Bartholomew ended the game in that same inning, hitting a three-run homer over right to also score Maddi Banks and Chloe Parks and make it a 10-0 final.
 
NOTES:
  • Reeves got the win, shutout and no-hitter in the circle, allowing just three walks.
  • Bartholomew had two homers, including a walk-off in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Bewick and Bartholomew went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Four RedHawks hit homers and seven had hits.
  • The RedHawks had three home runs in the bottom of the sixth.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Bartholomew hit a homer, her third of the day, over left field in the bottom of the second to put the RedHawks on the board 1-0.
  • In the bottom of the third, Golembiewski lined a homer over left to stretch the lead to 2-0.
  • The RedHawks doubled their lead in that same inning to 4-0 when Blaska and Spaid crossed the plate on a double from Bewick.
  • In the very next at-bat, Bartholomew doubled to score Bewick and push the lead to 5-0.
  • Kobayashi hit her second homer of the day in the bottom of the fourth, also scoring Spaid, to up the lead to 7-0.
  • Blaska walked the game off with the RedHawks' 100th homer of the season. Golembiewski also crossed the plate to make it a 9-0 final.
 
NOTES:
  • Hitchcock threw a one-hitter in the circle. She struck out one and shut out the Falcons.
  • Four RedHawks had homers; six had hits.
  • Bartholomew and Bewick went 2-for-2 at the plate.
  • Spaid is now tied for sixth nationally in career homers with 90. She is also the active career home run leader.
  • Golembiewski now leads the country in homers this season with 24. Spaid is right behind her with 23.
  • Bartholomew, Kobayashi and Golembiewski all had multiple homers on the day.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks will be in Indianapolis, Ind. next Tuesday, April 9 at 5 p.m. to take on Butler University.
