RedHawks Host NIU Wednesday Night

ON TAP: The Miami University women's basketball team hosts Northern Illinois on Wednesday, March 6 in the first of two home games this week. Opening tip is slated for 7 p.m.

FRESHMAN PHENOM: Amber Tretter has recorded seven double-doubles in her last 10 games and is averaging 13.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game since Jan. 27 (last nine games). Overall, the freshman is second in scoring (10.0) and first in rebounding (7.7) for Miami. She has nine double-doubles this season and ranks fourth in the MAC with 1.1 blocks/game. Her 206 rebounds are the most by a freshman in program history.

IN WITH THE NEW: Head Coach Glenn Box and his staff brought in nine new players for the 2023-24 campaign. Joining the RedHawks are four transfers and five freshmen, including one from Spain and two from Canada. Eight of Miami's top-nine scorers are first-year players with the RedHawks.
ABOUT NORTHERN ILLINOIS: Northern Illinois is 13-15 overall and 6-10 in MAC play (currently the No. 8 seed). NIU ranks sixth-best in the MAC with a 64.8 scoring average and are led by Jayden Marable (11.6 ppg.) and Brooke Stonebraker (11.4 ppg.). Stonebraker's 9.1 rebounds per game rank second in the MAC, for a team that is third in the conference at 40.4 rebounds per contest.

SERIES WITH THE HUSKIES: This will be the 48th meeting between the two programs, with NIU holding a 24-23 all-time series advantage. Miami has won the last two meetings in Oxford.

ROUND TWO VERSUS NIU: Miami led 46-43 with nine minutes left in the contest before dropping a 58-48 decision to Northern Illinois back on Jan. 6. Amber Tretter led the way for Miami with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Lakresha Edwards and Katey Richason each added 11 points.

BGSU RECAP: Miami dropped a 66-47 decision to Bowling Green last Saturday afternoon in the Stroh Center. Cori Lard led Miami with a career-high 17 points. The RedHawks were 6-of-20 from behind the arc, while BGSU connected on 10-of-21 triples.

WINNING WITH DEFENSE: While averaging just under 54 points per contest this season, the RedHawks have leaned heavily on its defense this year. In MAC games, Miami ranks third in scoring defense (60.4), first in field goal percentage defense (38.1%), fourth in turnovers forced (17.7) and third in steals (9.8).

GREAT SCOTT: Jadyn Scott is tops on the team at 10.6 points per game this season, after averaging 3.6 a contest last season at Cincinnati. She has scored in double-figures 14 times this season, including a career-high 27 points in a win over Georgia State on Feb. 10.

RETURN OF THE MAC: While Katey Richason has missed time this season with an injury, in her nine conference games this year, the junior is averaging 10.3 points (17th in the MAC) and 6.4 rebounds (10th in the MAC) per game. She has scored in double-figures in 6-of-9 MAC games and had a career-high 13 rebounds earlier this year at Western Michigan.

SISTER, SISTER: Twin sisters Jadyn and Jada Scott were four-year letter winners for the Cincinnati Bearcats before joining Miami. The duo combined to play in 194 games in their career at UC. Last season Jadyn was eighth on the team in scoring (3.6), while Jada was 11th (1.8). In their first year with the RedHawks the duo ranks first and sixth for Miami in scoring.

WOMAN OF STEAL: Junior Cori Lard ranks second in the MAC with 2.2 steals per contest. She had a career-high five steals at Central Michigan  and has multiple steals in a game 18 times this season. She has had at least four steals in a game seven different times this year. Lard has turned many of those steals into points and has scored at least nine points in 10-straight games.

MAC TOURNAMENT UPDATE: If the MAC Tournament started today, the RedHawks would be left out of the conference tournament as the No. 9 seed. Miami currently trails No. 8 NIU (6-10) by one game and No. 6 and No. 7 Western Michigan (7-9) and Ohio (7-9) by two games. Miami closes the season with contests versus NIU and Ohio.

NEW ADDITION: Jessie Gauna, a freshman on the Miami field hockey team, joined the RedHawks basketball program on Monday, Jan. 26 to add some much needed depth to the roster. She averaged 10 points per game and was a second-team all-league member her senior year of high school.
