RedHawks Down Broncos 8-2

OXFORD, Ohio – On Friday evening the Miami University softball team opened up Mid-American Conference play by defeating Western Michigan University 8-2. A typically dominant RedHawk offense, paired with impressive pitching from Madilyn Reeves, led to the victory. The RedHawks move to 16-6 on the season (1-0 MAC). The Broncos drop to 10-11 (0-1 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Reeves started the RedHawks off strong in the top of the first, retiring the first three batters.
  • Holly Blaska lined a two-RBI single to left in the bottom of the first. Jenna Golembiewski and Karli Spaid both easily crossed home to put the RedHawks up 2-0.
  • The second, third, and fourth innings were quiet. Both teams had base runners in scoring position, but neither were able to capitalize.
  • In the top of the fifth, a lucky RBI single from the Broncos halved the Miami lead at 2-1.
  • Spaid grabbed the RedHawk's first home run of the season at home, her 15th on the season overall, in the bottom of the fifth. She easily cleared the center field fence to push the lead to 3-1.
  • Still in the bottom of the fifth, Sami Bewick hit a long sac fly against the right field fence that scored Kate Kobayashi and Blaska. Reagan Bartholomew then hit a no-doubt homer over center. Chloe Parks also scored, stretching the deficit to 7-1.
  • A blooper hit from Western Michigan in the top of the sixth scored one to make it a 7-2 game.
  • Parks legged out an infield single in the bottom of the sixth that allowed Blaska to score from second, catching the Broncos' defense sleeping, and extending the lead to 8-2.
  • The RedHawks held this lead through the top of the seventh, taking the game 8-2.

NOTES:
  • Reeves was stellar in the circle, allowing only six hits and two runs. She struck out five in her complete seven innings.
  • Karli Spaid and Reagan Bartholomew grabbed homers. Spaid leads the RedHawks, and the country, with 15 on the season.
  • Golembiewski is now on an 11-game hitting streak.
  • Blaska reached base on every plate appearance.
  • Five different RedHawks had RBI, Blaska, Bartholomew, and Bewick had two each.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks will be back on the field in Oxford, Ohio, tomorrow, March 16 at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader against the Broncos.
