NORMAN, Okla. – The Miami University softball team held off No. 1 Oklahoma for seven innings, before eventually falling in a 9-7 walk-off loss. Oklahoma moves to 15-0 on the season. The Red and White then downed the University of Louisiana at Lafayette 12-10 in an offensively strong game where the RedHawks had eight extra-base hits. The Ragin' Cajuns drop to 8-10 on the season and the RedHawks move to 10-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1 vs. OKLAHOMA):
- In the top of the first, Karli Spaid grabbed a 2-0 lead for the RedHawks with a home run over right center that also scored Allie Cummins.
- Still in the first, Holly Blaska hit a solo home run, also over right, to extend the lead over the Sooners, 3-0.
- The Sooners grabbed a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game.
- On a sac groundout in the bottom of the fourth Oklahoma shortened the gap to 3-2.
- Oklahoma then evened the score 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run.
- In the bottom of the sixth, the Sooners took the lead on a string of three home runs, the first a solo, the second two runs scored, and the third also a solo putting Oklahoma ahead 7-3.
- Cummins cut that lead to 7-5 with a two-run homer deep over center field to also score Chloe Parks, who had legged out an infield single to get the RedHawks a base-runner.
- Jenna Golembiewski and then Karli Spaid followed that up with a pair of solo home runs to tie the game 7-7. The RedHawks went back-to-back-to-back on home runs.
- The Sooners walked it off in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run to make it a 9-7 final.
NOTES:
- In the RedHawks' second-ever game against the Sooners they scored seven runs, six more than in their first meeting last season (1-13 loss).
- Spaid was the first person to hit a home run at the Sooners' brand new park, Love's Field. Blaska was the second.
- Spaid went 2-for-4 at the plate with two home runs.
- The Red and White hit five home runs in the game, from Spaid, Cummins, Golembiewski, and Blaska.
- Addy Jarvis, Ashley Hitchcock, and Madilyn Reeves saw time in the circle.
- Jarvis held one of the best offenses in the country to eight hits and five runs, striking out two.
- The last time the Sooners gave up seven runs was last season in a NCAA Super Regionals matchup against then-No. 16 Clemson University, where they narrowly won 8-7 in nine innings.
- Only 38 other games in the Sooners' 68-0 win streak from the 2023 and 2024 seasons have gone the full seven innings.
- Miami now has 39 home runs in 12 games. They lead the country in home runs and slugging percentage, topping teams with over 19 games already played.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2 VS. LOUISIANA AT LAFAYETTE):
- Blaska started the scoring off in game two in the top of the first with a two-run homer that also got Golembiewski across the plate, giving the RedHawks a 2-0 lead.
- On a RBI single in the bottom of the first the Ragin' Cajuns cut the lead in half at 2-1.
- Blaska hit another homer in the top of the third (her third of the day) to push the RedHawk lead to 3-1.
- In the top of the fourth Golembiewski hit her second home run of the day, sending it deep over left center and also scoring Cummins to put the Red and White ahead 5-1.
- A double from Blaska in that same inning sent Spaid home. Park later hit a two-run homer to also score Blaska widening the gap to 8-1.
- Louisiana cut the lead in half to 8-4 in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI double, a sac groundout, and a RBI single.
- With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, a hit batter sent a run across the plate for Louisiana. A three-run homer then gave them the 9-8 lead.
- On a fielder's choice and error drawn by Reagan Bartholomew in the top of the fifth, Parks scored to even the score at 9-9.
- Cummins hit a sac foul out in that same inning to bring home Hadley Parisien and take back the lead. Golembiewski then tacked on two more runs, making it 12-9, with a 2 RBI single where Parisien and Bartholomew crossed the plate.
- A homer in the bottom of the seventh from the Ragin' Cajuns made it a 12-10 game, but they could not come back from the deficit, handing the RedHawks the 12-10 win.
NOTES:
- Golembiewski and Parks went 3-for-5 at the plate.
- Cummins and Parisien went 2-for-3 offensively.
- Blaska went 3-for-4 at the plate and had three home runs total on the day.
- The RedHawks had eight extra-base hits with four doubles and four home runs.
- Jarvis went three innings on the rubber, allowing only three hits to take the win.
- Reeves went four innings in the circle, allowing just five hits and one earned run.
