RedHawks Face Falcons in Crucial MAC Contest

ON TAP: The Miami University women's basketball team looks to get back to its winning ways with a Saturday, March 2 trip to face the Bowling Green Falcons. Opening tip is slated for 2 p.m.

FRESHMAN PHENOM: Amber Tretter has recorded seven double-doubles in her last nine games and is averaging 13.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game since Jan. 27 (last nine games). Overall, the freshman is second in scoring (9.9) and first in rebounding (7.7) for Miami. She has nine double-doubles this season and ranks fourth in the MAC with 1.1 blocks/game. Her 201 rebounds are the most by a freshman in program history, passing Kristen Olowinski's 188 in 2009-10.

IN WITH THE NEW: Head Coach Glenn Box and his staff brought in nine new players for the 2023-24 campaign. Joining the RedHawks are four transfers and five freshmen, including one from Spain and two from Canada. Eight of Miami's top-nine scorers are first-year players with the RedHawks.

SAVING BEST FOR LAST: Despite the 8-18 record, Miami went 4-3 in the month of February, with conference wins over Akron, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan.

ABOUT BOWLING GREEN: Bowling Green is 14-12 overall and are 8-7 in MAC play (currently the No. 5 seed). BGSU ranks fourth-best in the MAC with a 67.5 scoring average and are led by Morgan Sharps (15.0 ppg.) and Amy Velasco (14.6 ppg.). Erika Porter's 6.3 rebounds per contest rank 12th in the MAC.

SERIES WITH THE FALCONS: This will be the 93rd meeting between the two schools with BGSU holding a 57-35 all-time advantage. Miami has not won inside the Stroh Center since Feb. 1, 2020 (80-59).

ROUND TWO VERSUS BGSU: With the help of four double-digit scorers, Miami added a 56-47 win over Bowling Green back on Jan. 20. Miami was led by Cori Lard, who finished with 12 points and was joined by Hennessey Luu-Brown (11), Amber Tretter (10) and Katey Richason (10) in double figures.

CMU RECAP: Five RedHawks scored in double figures for Miami on Wednesday evening in a 76-73 double-overtime loss at Central Michigan. Katey Richason scored a career-high 21 points and Cori Lard added a career-high 15 points and five steals in the loss. It was Miami's first double-overtime game since Nov. 16, 2015 (won vs. Evansville, 91-85) as the RedHawks recorded a season-best 49 rebounds. Four different RedHawks played at least 40 minutes in the contest, led by Lard's 47.

WINNING WITH DEFENSE: While averaging just over 54 points per contest this season, the RedHawks have leaned heavily on its defense this year. In MAC games, Miami ranks third in scoring defense (60.1), first in field goal percentage defense (37.8%), fourth in turnovers forced (18.1) and first in steals (10.1).

BENCH PRESS: Miami's bench has scored 39 points (18 vs. EMU, 21 vs. CMU) over the past two contest, which is a major improvement as of late. Before the contest with EMU, Miami's bench totaled 30 points over the previous seven games (7.5/game). Much of that credit should go to Katey Richason, who has scored 35 points off the bench in the past two games after missing the previous eight games with an injury.

GREAT SCOTT: Jadyn Scott is tops on the team at 10.6 points per game this season, after averaging 3.6 a contest last season at Cincinnati. She has scored in double-figures 13 times this season, including a career-high 27 points in a win over Georgia State on Feb. 10.

RETURN OF THE MAC: While Katey Richason has missed time this season with an injury, in her eight conference games this year, the junior is averaging 11.4 points (15th in the MAC) and 7.1 rebounds (8th in the MAC) per game. She has scored in double-figures in 6-of-8 MAC games and had a career-high 13 rebounds earlier this year at Western Michigan.

SISTER, SISTER: Twin sisters Jadyn and Jada Scott were four-year letter winners for the Cincinnati Bearcats before joining Miami. The duo combined to play in 194 games in their career at UC. Last season Jadyn was eighth on the team in scoring (3.6), while Jada was 11th (1.8). In their first year with the RedHawks the duo ranks first and fifth for Miami in scoring.

WOMAN OF STEAL: Junior Cori Lard ranks second in the MAC with 2.2 steals per contest. She had a career-high five steals at Central Michigan on Wednesday and has multiple steals in a game 17 times this season. She has had at least four steals in a game seven different times this year. Lard has turned many of those steals into points and has scored at least nine points in nine-straight games.

MAC TOURNAMENT UPDATE: If the MAC Tournament started today, the RedHawks would be left out of the conference tournament as the No. 9 seed. Miami currently trails both Ohio and Northern Illinois by one game, but the RedHawks play both squads at home to close the regular season.

NEW ADDITION: Jessie Gauna, a freshman on the Miami field hockey team, joined the RedHawks basketball program on Monday, Jan. 26 to add some much needed depth to the roster. She averaged 10 points per game and was a second-team all-league member her senior year of high school.
