DENVER, Colo.— The Miami University hockey team dropped its series finale in Denver 8-1 to the No. 3/3 Pioneers Saturday night.
Robby Drazner scored his second goal of the season for the RedHawks (7-20-3, 1-17-2 NCHC). Tristan Broz had a goal and three assists for Denver (21-8-3, 12-6-2 NCHC). DU goaltender Matt Davis stopped all 27 shots he faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 3:39 1st (Denver 1-0) | The Pioneers lit the lamp less than four minutes into the contest, as Bruno Bruveris saved a Boston Buckberger shot but was unable to corral the rebound. Jack Devine got a piece of the loose puck in front of the net, with Broz ultimately knocking it home to put the Pios up 1-0.
- 10:59 1st (Denver 2-0) | Denver doubled its lead midway through the opening stanza, as Alex Weiermair scored off assists from Connor Caponi and Sean Behrens. Bruveris thought he had stopped the puck and was looking for a whistle, but Weiermair's shot had slid just underneath his pads and crossed the goal line.
- 18:44 1st (Miami 2-1) | The RedHawks got on the board with a fortunate deflection, as a delayed penalty gave Denver a 6-on-5 empty-net situation late in the opening period. After Drazner barely tipped a cross-ice pass, the puck caromed perfectly off the side boards and slid the length of the ice into the vacated DU net to pull Miami within 2-1.
- 3:52 2nd (Denver 3-1) | Devine tacked on a power-play goal for the home team early in the middle period after a give-and-go passing sequence with Broz. DU goaltender Matt Davis started the play with a pass ahead and was credited with the secondary assist.
- 7:56 2nd (Denver 4-1) | With one player from each team in the penalty box, Zeev Buium added to the Pioneers' lead. Moments after Aidan Thompson won a faceoff in Miami's defensive zone, Buium took a pass from his brother Shai Buium and finished off a 4-on-4 goal.
- 9:44 2nd (Denver 5-1) | The Pioneers scored again with three seconds remaining on a power play. Jared Wright took a pass from Buckberger and fired a shot that bounced off the end boards and back toward the goalpost. Broz kept the play alive and Wright capitalized on the second opportunity in close to make it 5-1.
- 9:41 3rd (Denver 6-1) | Rieger Lorenz added to DU's lead with a one-timer in the third period, blasting a shot off a feed across from Broz. Buckberger added an assist on the play.
- 10:36 3rd (Denver 7-1) | The home team struck again less than a minute later. After Kieran Cebrian sent the puck to Sean Behrens at the point, Behrens relayed it to Sam Harris, who skated in and fired a shot from close range.
- 19:26 3rd (Denver 8-1) | Denver capped the scoring in the closing seconds, as Cale Ashcroft ripped a shot that Cebrian battled for near the crease. Miko Matikka was able to clean up the play and collect the game's final goal.
