No. 12 SCSU Tops Miami in Series Finale

ST. CLOUD, Minn.– No. 12/14 St. Cloud State scored three goals in an eight-minute span of the second period and went on to defeat the Miami University hockey team 3-1 Saturday night.

Johnny Waldron scored the only goal for the RedHawks (3-7-2, 0-2-0 NCHC), Austin Burnevik had two goals to lead the Huskies (8-3-0, 2-0-0 NCHC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 2:37 2nd (SCSU 1-0) | Burnevik opened the scoring in a 2-on-1 situation in the middle stanza. After he sent a pass to Barrett Hall, Hall eluded a sliding RedHawk defender and got a shot off, with Burnevik then knocking home the loose puck on the back side. Verner Miettinen earned the secondary assist on the play.
  • 4:02 2nd (SCSU 2-0) | The Huskies lit the lamp again less than 90 seconds later, as Daimon Gardner skated behind Bruno Bruveris' net and threw a puck into the crease that deflected off a skate for Mason Salquist to tap in.
  • 10:33 2nd (SCSU 3-0) | SCSU grabbed its third goal when Burnevik was able to maneuver past Bruveris and wrap a shot inside the near goalpost from a tough angle. Colin Ralph started the play for the Huskies, with Hall sending the puck over to Burnevik to get the other assist.
  • 1:12 3rd (Miami 3-1) | Waldron got Miami on the board early in the third period with a power-play tally. Max Dukovac took a feed from Waldron at the goal line and relayed a pass to Ryan Sullivan in front, with all three RedHawk forwards then digging at the puck in a scrum around SCSU goaltender Isak Posch. Waldron finally managed to jam it past Posch to pull the RedHawks within 3-1.

NOTES
  • Miami killed off a second-period major penalty and improved to 5-for-5 killing majors this season; the RedHawks are now 41-for-44 overall on the penalty kill.
  • Waldron scored his 20th career goal, with seven of those coming against SCSU.
  • SCSU had only allowed two power-play goals all season before Waldron's in the third period.
  • Dukovac collected the 30th point of his career.
  • Bruveris made 33 saves between the pipes for the Red and White.
