OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team (8-21, 2-16 MAC) defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies (4-24, 2-16) in a four-set match (23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19) Saturday evening at Millett Hall.
Caroline Cermack knocked down a career-high 16 kills, and
Gracie Norris totaled a career-best 44 assists to lead all players in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A pair of attack errors from the Huskies and a kill from Ellie Hanson propelled Miami to a 3-0 advantage at the start of play. Northern Illinois came within one at 10-9, but Cermack hit a kill, and Norris served an ace to fend off the Huskies. Northern Illinois went on to even the score at 15-15. Chelsea Williams had a solo block and kill to knot things up at 23-23, but the offensive push fell just short, as NIU took the first set 25-23.
- The Huskies started the second set with a 6-2 lead. Miami captured its first lead of the set after Ana Vetter and Raegan Lantz combined for a block at 12-11. With the set tied at 15-15, Williams recorded back-to-back kills. A Gentry Warrick service ace and two kills from the RedHawks secured a 25-23 win.
- Cermack and Warrick each had two kills in the beginning of the third to set Miami up with an 8-5 lead. Miami remained ahead 14-10 thanks to a bad set and service error from NIU. The Huskies trailed by two points at 21-19 but would come no closer as the RedHawks claimed the third set at 25-19.
- The RedHawks grabbed the first two points of the fourth set off of a Lantz kill and Cermack service ace. With the score even at 7-7, Miami went on a 4-0 run, looking to pull away from NIU. A block from Warrick and Norris, which was then followed up with a kill from Warrick, extended the RedHawk lead to 19-12. The Huskies attempted to come back, but a kill from Williams sealed the final set of the night for Miami, 25-19.
