Miami Takes Down Alaska Anchorage 3-2 For Noreen's First Win

OXFORD, Ohio– The Miami University hockey team defeated Alaska Anchorage 3-2 Friday night to give head coach Anthony Noreen his first win with the program.

Johnny Waldron, Max Dukovac and William Hallén lit the lamp for the RedHawks, who remain unbeaten at 1-0-2. Bruno Bruveris stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced in net for Miami. Connor Marritt led the Seawolves (0-3-0) with two points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 19:18 1st (Miami 1-0) | With the seconds ticking down in the first period, Waldron put the RedHawks on top with a power-play goal. Hutchison found Colby Ambrosio on his right, and a tic-tac-toe passing sequence from Ambrosio to Christophe Fillion ended with a Waldron one-timer in front to make it 1-0.
  • 19:21 2nd (Miami 2-0) | Similar to how the opening period ended, the RedHawks converted a power-play opportunity in the final minute of the middle frame to double their lead. Raimonds Vitolins slid a pass the width of the zone to Casper Nassen, who fired the puck toward the net. Dukovac skated in front and tipped it home perfectly to give Miami a two-goal advantage.
  • 00:18 3rd (Alaska Anchorage 2-1) | Marritt gave the Seawolves life, scoring on the opening shift of the third period off a pass from Aiden Westin. Max Helgeson brought the puck into the zone and dished it to Westin, who made an extra pass to the trailing Marritt for UAA's first goal of the evening.
  • 00:50 3rd (Miami 3-1) | Miami answered back half a minute later to restore a two-goal cushion. Vitolins won the faceoff to Hutchison, who ripped a shot from deep that Hallén redirected in mid-air past UAA goaltender Greg Orosz.
  • 18:35 3rd (Alaska Anchorage 3-2) | The Seawolves took advantage of a late power play to pull their goalie and score an extra-attacker goal. In a scramble following the faceoff, Marrit tipped the puck out toward Logan Acheson, who managed to get the puck to Ryan Johnson. Johnson's slap shot from the top of the faceoff circle cut the deficit to 3-2, but the RedHawks hung on from there to claim victory in their home opener.

NOTES
  • Vitolins put up multiple assists in a game for the first time as a RedHawk; his last two-assist game came for Vermont on Nov. 13, 2021 at New Hampshire.
  • Ambrosio's assist was the 70th point of his collegiate career.
  • Fillion produced his 30th career assist.
  • Dukovac collected a point for the second consecutive game and lit the lamp for the fifth time in his career.
  • Miami is now 13-for-14 on the penalty kill this season.
