Five different RedHawks produced rushing touchdowns, led by Keyon Mozee's two scores, as Miami (3-1) rolled up 466 yards on the ground. Brett Gabbert completed 75% of his passes (15 of 20) for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Marqui Adams had 274 passing yards and 60 rushing yards to lead the Hornets (0-4).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Miami went on top less than three minutes into the contest. After the Hornets went three-and-out, Gage Larvadain returned the ensuing punt 23 yards to give the RedHawks good field position. Larvadain then raced 46 yards on a reverse on Miami's second play from scrimmage, and Rashad Amos scored a five-yard rushing touchdown on the next play to give Miami a 7-0 lead.
- After DSU tied the game on a 50-yard screen pass, the RedHawks quickly re-took the lead. Miami took over at midfield after a kickoff out of bounds, and Gabbert connected with Kevin Davis and Joe Wilkins Jr. on back-to-back passes to move the Red and White into field goal range. Graham Nicholson ended the drive with a 44-yard kick to make it 10-7.
- Miami extended its advantage on the next possession. After a key third-down conversion to Wilkins, a 25-yard rush by Amos carried the RedHawks into the red zone and Javon Tracy caught a 10-yard slant for a touchdown on the next play.
- The RedHawks struck again the next time they got the ball, marching five plays in 75 yards to take a 24-7 lead on a 34-yard scoring strike to Reggie Virgil, his first career touchdown catch.
- Miami stretched the lead to 31-7 with 7:21 remaining in the half on a six-yard touchdown run by Kenny Tracy. The key play on the six-play scoring drive was a strong 24-yard run by Amos.
- DSU scored with 1:24 left in the half to cut the deficit to 31-13, but the Hornets' extra point attempt was no good. Miami promptly responded with a 10-play, 63-yard scoring drive, including three consecutive catches by Cade McDonald, to take a 34-13 lead into the locker room. Nicholson capped the drive with a 20-yard field goal as time expired.
- The RedHawks picked up right where they left off after halftime, needing only two plays to find the end zone again. After a career-long 42-yard run by Kenny Tracy, Mozee raced 23 yards to pay dirt to put Miami up 41-13 with only 40 seconds gone.
- Aveon Smith checked in at quarterback on the RedHawks' next drive and ripped off a 48-yard run on his fourth snap to get Miami down to the DSU six-yard line. Mozee did the rest, punching it in for another touchdown run on the next play to give Miami a 48-20 lead.
- It was Jordan Brunson's turn to carry the load on the next RedHawk possession, as Brunson went 57 yards on the first play to get Miami back into the red zone again. Brunson crossed the goal line on his third carry of the 57-second scoring drive to make it 55-20 midway through the third quarter.
- On Miami's final touchdown drive of the day, Nate Milanowski had 11 carries for 69 yards, including a one-yard scoring plunge with 3:05 to play.
NOTES
- Brunson led the RedHawks with 109 rushing yards, good for the first 100-yard game of his career; he averaged 12.1 yards on his nine carries.
- Gabbert passed Josh Betts (7,029 yards from 2002-05) for third on the program's career passing yardage list; Gabbert now has 7,105.
- Gabbert also tied Betts for fourth in career touchdown passes (54).
- Miami rolled up 336 first-half yards on 33 offensive plays and finished the game with 646 yards of offense; it was the first time Miami cracked 600 yards in total offense since 2017 (612 vs. Bowling Green).
- Miami owns a 3-1 record (and has won three non-conference regular-season games in a year) for the first time since 2003.
- With his 48th career win as Miami head coach, Chuck Martin matched Terry Hoeppner for second-most in program history (Randy Walker has 59).
- This was Miami's highest-scoring game under Martin and the most points the RedHawks have put up since a 62-26 win over Kent State in 1997.
- Amos, Brunson and Milanowski each scored the first touchdowns of their college careers.
- After kneel-downs on the last two plays of the game, the RedHawks ended with 466 rushing yards (narrowly missing the school record of 478 set in 1975) while holding DSU to just 77.
- Miami had eight tackles for loss, led by Josh Lukusa's 1.5.
- Including the RedHawks' game-winning overtime touchdown at Cincinnati last week, Miami scored points on 10 consecutive possessions before coming up short on a 4th-and-1 play late in the third quarter.
UP NEXT:
The RedHawks begin MAC play on Saturday, Sept. 30 with a trip to Kent State. Kick time is set for 2:30 p.m. in Kent, Ohio.
