Miami Drops Three-Set Match to Valparaiso

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Miami University volleyball team (4-8) dropped a three-set match to Valparaiso (7-5) Saturday afternoon in the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational. Freshman Chelsea Williams was named to the all-tournament team.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A pair of service aces from Valparaiso gave them a 3-1 lead at the start of the first set. Brooke Cirigliano and Williams each responded with a kill to bring Miami within one at 6-5. The Beacons followed this with 12-4 run to extend their advantage to 18-9. Valparaiso finished the set with a 25-14 win.
  • Numerous kills and service aces gave the RedHawks a 7-4 lead at the start of the second set. The Beacons tied the set at 8 apiece, but Miami regained the lead at 12-11 thanks to an Ellie Hanson service ace and Williams kill. Despite a strong push from the Red and White, Valparaiso took the set 25-17.
  • In the beginning of the third set the Red and White trailed 6-4 after Breannah Peterson knocked down her third kill of the match (career-high). The Beacons eventually stretched their lead to 19-12, before Miami used a flurry of kills and service aces to bring the score to 20-18. Despite the effort, Valparaiso won the final set 25-19.
NOTES:
  • Hanson led all players with 12 kills.
  • Hayden Hicks put down a team-high three service aces.
