OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team fought through a physical game on Friday to take down Longwood University 3-1. This is Miami's first Mid-American Conference game of the season, putting the RedHawks at 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAC. Longwood drops to 2-5 and 0-1 in the MAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Although the Miami offense was dominant early, the score remained 0-0 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
- The second quarter was much like the first, but despite the RedHawks racking up seven shots and five penalty corners to Longwood's one and one, the game remained without a score.
- Just under three minutes into the third quarter, Riley Mazzalupi took one to the back of the net to put the RedHawks up 1-0.
- With less than a minute remaining in the quarter, Longwood scored during a penalty corner to tie the game at 1-1.
- However, less than 40 seconds later, Paula Peña Martinez answered with a goal of her own during another penalty corner to give the RedHawks the lead for good. She was assisted by Claudia Negrete Garcia.
- With just over five minutes remaining in the game, Lucia Ventos scored her first career goal to put Miami ahead 3-1.
