Martinez, Smith Help Vegas Capture Its First Stanley Cup

LAS VEGAS, Nev.-- Former Miami Hockey standouts Alec Martinez and Reilly Smith scored a goal apiece in Game 5 to help the Vegas Golden Knights capture the franchise's first-ever Stanley Cup with a 9-3 win tonight at T-Mobile Arena. The Pacific Division champions defeated the Florida Panthers in five games after previously eliminating the Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars.
Smith put up 14 points in the postseason (4-10-14) after ranking fourth on the team with 56 points during the regular season (26-30-56). Martinez, who contributed 14 regular-season points (3-11-14), added a pair of playoff goals and five assists in the chase for the Cup. Both players lit the lamp in the span of 1:45 tonight as Vegas scored four consecutive second-period goals to break the game open.
Martinez was a Second-Team West All-American for Miami and produced 67 points from 2005-2008 (21-46-67) with the Red and White. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, previously winning titles with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and 2014.

Smith is tied for ninth in Miami Hockey history with 66 goals and finished his RedHawk career (2009-12) with 122 points, which ranks in the top 30 all-time. He was a First-Team West All-American and Hobey Baker Award finalist in 2012. This is his first career Stanley Cup.
