RedHawks Take Game One Against McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La.--  The Miami University baseball team defeated McNeese State University by a score of 14-8 Wednesday. The RedHawks improve to 20-34 (13-17 MAC) while the Cowboys drop to 32-20 (12-12 SLC).

The RedHawks scored early and had a blast of offense in the second inning. The Cowboys gradually tacked on runs but it wasn't enough. The RedHawks ran away with the game, claiming a 14-8 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Miami kicked off the top of the first with back-to-back singles from Benji Brokemond and Cooper Weiss. Ryland Zaborowski followed up with a third straight single to score Brokemond and make it 1-0 RedHawks.  

  • The top of the second started with three consecutive walks to load the bases with no outs. Brokemond singled to center, scoring two. With two outs in the inning, David Novak followed up with a two-out single to third base to load the bases. Dillon Baker walked to force a run in. Next, Tommy Harrison singled to right center to score two more. With two runners on, Zach MacDonald hit a home run to left field for the final runs of the inning, making it 9-0 RedHawks.

  • The Cowboys got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, scoring one and making it 9-1 RedHawks.

  • In the top of the third, Brokemond led off with a triple down the right field line. Weiss singled to drive the run in, making it 10-1 in the third inning.

  • In the top of the fourth, Baker singled to left field and stole second. Blake Buzzeo doubled down the left field line with two outs to score Baker and make it 11-1 RedHawks. 

  • In the bottom half of the inning, the Cowboys added another run, making it 11-2 RedHawks through four innings of work.

  • The Cowboys chipped away and added another run in the bottom of the fifth, making it 11-3 RedHawks. 

  • For the third consecutive inning, the Cowboys scored. They added three more runs to the board, to make it 11-6 RedHawks through six innings.

  • In the top of the seventh, Nate Stone led off with a single to right field. Stone advanced to second on the throw and third on a flyout. Brokemond singled up the middle to score Stone. Weiss followed up with a double down the left field line to score Brokemond and make it 13-6 RedHawks.

  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Cowboys scored two more to make it 13-8 RedHawks.

  • MacDonald hit a solo homer to right field for the RedHawks' final run, making it 14-8.

 Miami Game Notes: 

  • Brokemond went 4-for-5 with three RBI.

  • MacDonald went 2-for-3 with four RBI. 

What's Next:

The RedHawks play game two against McNeese on Thursday, May 18. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET in Lake Charles, La.
