HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — The Miami University baseball team defeated Northern Kentucky University by a final score of 16-11 Wednesday.The RedHawks improve to 10-25 overall (6-9 MAC) and the Norse drop to 18-13 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the top of the first inning, Benji Brokemond kicked off the game with a single to right field. With one out, Ryland Zaborowski singled to left field. Zach MacDonald followed up with a walk to load the bases. All runners advanced after a balk was called on the pitcher. One run scored to put the RedHawks on the board first. With runners on second and third, Evan Appelwick hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field to score Zaborowski and make it 2-0 RedHawks in the first.
- With two outs in the top of the second, Dillon Baker reached base via walk. After stealing second base, Baker scored on a throwing error. Brokemond reached first base. Cooper Weiss followed up with a two-run home run to left field to put the RedHawks up 5-0 in the second.
- The Norse got on the board in the third inning, scoring three and making the score 5-3 RedHawks.
- In the top of the sixth inning, Brokemond reached base after being hit by pitch. After advancing to second on a sac bunt, Brokemond scored on a Zaborowski single up the middle. MacDonald followed up with a walk. With two outs in the inning, Brian Zapp loaded the bases after being hit by pitch. Dom Magliocca answered with a double to right center to score two more and put the RedHawks up 8-3 in the sixth inning.
- The Norse narrowed the deficit in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two and making it 8-5 RedHawks after six innings of work.
- With two outs in the top of the seventh, Brokemond reached base via walk. Weiss followed up with a two-run home run to left field. With the bases empty, Zaborowski reached base via walk. MacDonald followed up with a double to right field to cap a three-run inning, making it 11-5 RedHawks in the seventh inning.
- In the bottom of the seventh, the Norse tacked on one more run to make it 11-6 RedHawks.
- In the top of the eighth, Magliocca and David Novak led off the inning with back-to-back walks. After a double steal, Baker singled to left field to score Magliocca. Brokemond followed up with a single up the middle to score Novak. Baker scored from third on a fielder's choice making it 14-6 RedHawks.
- In the bottom of the eighth, the Norse rallied and score five to inch themselves closer, making it 14-11 RedHawks after eight innings.
- Zapp led off the top of the ninth inning with a walk. Baker doubled to left center, advancing the runner. With runners on first and third, Brokemond doubled down the right field, scoring the final two runs of the game, making it 16-11 RedHawks.
MIAMI GAME NOTES
- Weiss recorded two home runs and one walk with four RBI.
- Brokemond went four for five, with one walk and three RBI.
- RedHawks pitching staff recorded thirteen strikeouts.
