Collegiate Seizes Gold; Senior Earns Silver, Advances to Worlds

PEORIA, Ill.—Season-best performances, a national title and berth to the ISU World Championships highlighted the final day of competition for the Miami University synchronized skating teams at the U.S. Synchronized Skating National Championships on Saturday. The RedHawk collegiate team captured the program's 21st collegiate national title and the Vicki Korn Trophy, while the senior team earned a silver medal and punched their ticket to the world championships with a top-two finish.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (COLLEGIATE):
  • Collegiate_NationalChampionships2023Skating eighth among the 11-team field, Miami had a powerful, clean skate to amass a season-high score of 104.61. The RedHawks notched an executed element score of 56.44 and a program component score of 48.17.
  • The only collegiate team to crack 100 points at the event, it was the second-straight competition Miami has eclipsed 100 points.
  • It was the 21st collegiate national crown for Miami and second straight for the RedHawks.
  • Miami finished 12.00 points ahead of its nearest competitors, Michigan, who posted a score of 92.61. Western Michigan finished third (91.43). Trine (90.58), Adrian (90.48), Delaware (87.70), Michigan State (81.11), Team Excel (79.82), Illinois (70.47), Boston University (59.13) and Boston College (55.39) rounded out the field, respectively.
  • Saturday completed an impressive season for Miami's collegiate team that included four first-place finishes in their five competitions.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (SENIOR)
  • Senior_NationalChampionships2023A breath-taking free skate performance punctuated an exciting weekend for the RedHawks, who amassed a season-high score of 150.07 for their free skate. Miami posted an executed element score of 79.09 and a program component score of 70.98.
  • Miami finished with a season-best combined score of 223.63 to place second overall.
  • The Haydenettes notched a free skate score of 165.36 and finished with an overall score of 244.45 to place first in the senior division.
  • Skyliners (220.09), Teams Elite (213.10) and Adrian (201.51) rounded out the senior field, respectively.
  • The RedHawks and Haydenettes will represent the United States at the upcoming world championships.
  • This will be Miami's 14th trip to the world championships and is its second straight berth.
 
UP NEXT:
Miami's senior team will be one of two teams to represent the United States as Team USA at the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships March 31-April 1 in Lake Placid, New York. This concludes the competitive season for Miami's collegiate team.
