RedHawks Secure First Win in Slugfest

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Miami University baseball team secured its first win of the season by rallying from an early six-run deficit to defeat the University of Cincinnati 15-12. The RedHawks improved to 1-7, while the Bearcats fell to 2-6.

With an offensive explosion and a two-hour weather delay, a long evening's battle went Miami's way. The Red and White recorded 16 hits and three three-run home runs to come out on top in the slugfest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the top of the first, Evan Appelwick and Zach MacDonald reached base with back-to-back walks. Taking advantage of those walks, Ryland Zaborowski hit a homer to plate three, making it 3-0 RedHawks.

  • Leading off the top of the third, Zaborowski doubled to right center. Parker Lester reached base on an error with one out. With two on, Cooper Weiss homered to left field to make it 9-6 Bearcats.

  • Keeping the momentum going, Cristian Tejada led off the top of the fourth inning with a double down the left field line. Appelwick followed with a single to left field. With two on, Zaborowski hit his second home run of the night to make it 10-9 Bearcats.

  • In the top of the sixth, Nate Stone reached base via walk.  Lester followed up with a double down the left field line to score Stone, making it 11-10 Bearcats.

  • To lead off the top of the seventh, Appelwick drew a base on balls. MacDonald followed with a double down the left field line to score Appelwick. Zaborowski followed up with his own double. Stone walked to load the bases. With nowhere to go, Lester was walked to force MacDonald home. Weiss followed up with a single to left field to score Zaborowski to make it 13-12 RedHawks.

  • The top of the ninth was led off with back-to-back walks to Weiss and Tommy Harrison. With one out in the inning, Tejada walked to load the bases. Brian Zapp and MacDonald were both hit by pitch. Each pushed a run across, to make the final score 15-12 RedHawks.
